Over the next five months, innovators, developers, researchers, and designers will work together to create solutions that improve communication for people with speech impairments in Kenya and beyond.

The initiative is supported by @modal_labs, whose GPU sponsorship is powering the development of these cutting-edge models. All models, datasets, and tools from the sprint will be released open source, ensuring long-term impact and enabling further innovation.

This project is in collaboration with the @ucl's #GDIHub, Senses Hub, and @StrathU's @iLabAfrica. The project is creating ASR technologies that are culturally relevant, linguistically accurate, and inclusive of diverse speech patterns.

This marks the second innovation sprint in a pan-African effort to close the digital divide for individuals with speech impairments, building on a successful pilot in Ghana.

The second phase of the Centre for Digital and Language Inclusion (CDLI) initiative is now underway in Kenya, driving the development of inclusive Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) systems for people with non-typical or slurred speech, particularly in African languages.

Automatic Speech Recognition is transforming the ability of people with non-standard speech to communicate. The prevalence of mobile devices & free-to-access apps is making ASR accessible, convenient & less stigmatising for people with slurred or difficult-to-understand speech.

From collaborating with @GoogleResearch on AI for speech accessibility to exploring how AI can support mobility and independence, we’re pushing for tech that works for everyone, not just the default.

Our global research under the #AT2030Programme is demonstrating how AI can be a powerful force for inclusion when it’s designed with and by people with disabilities. #GDIHub

To begin this, a global-local community was formed, the Enabling Fridays Community which aimed to bring together local and global expertise working in the AT sector to identify routes that would unlock local innovation and improve current gaps in services.

When this programme finished, and the focus of the personnel involved was placed back on AT ( and the #AT2030Programme, this highly successful partnership was seen as a strong opportunity to develop innovation projects with a focus on local production systems.

The relationship between Zener Technologies, a digital manufacturing and innovation company in Kathmandu, and hashtag#GDIHub started during the Covid pandemic, on a different project aimed at locally producing medical devices across six countries.
