Minister of @FMEnvng @BalarabeAbbas_ , has launched the 2nd Subnational Climate Governance Performance Ranking (SCGPR 2.0) in Abuja assessing how states tackle climate change.

The NZNP Project will: Integrate climate and nature goals into Rivers & Bayelsa State plans to empower women and youth as leaders of the green transition, Restore wetlands & mangroves. Engage universities, communities & the private sector for sustainable innovation.

With the support of the Federal Ministry of Environment, @UNEP , @theGEF, and state partners, @UNDP reaffirms its commitment to walk with Nigeria from the creeks of Bayelsa to the cities of Rivers toward a greener, safer, and more prosperous future for all.

“This is about people,” Mrs. Attafuah emphasized. About restoring dignity to communities, creating green jobs, and building resilience against climate shocks. Together, we can transform the Niger Delta from a story of loss into one of hope, innovation, and sustainability.

“The urgency is real,” he said. Climate change and biodiversity loss are disrupting lives especially in the Niger Delta, home to rich mangroves, swamps, and rivers that have long sustained millions but now face severe degradation and pollution.

Today , @UNDPNigeria Resident Representative Mrs. Elsie G. Attafuah rep by Chiri Muta joined partners to launch the Net Zero Nature Positive Project a bold initiative to restore nature and advance Nigeria’s journey toward Net Zero emissions by 2060 and 30% conservation by 2030.

Mrs. Nkechi appreciated UNDP, the Department of Forestry, and all partners for their collaboration, noting that this workshop will build capacity, refine strategies, and align all stakeholders for effective implementation. “Together, we can deliver impact.”

She emphasized that climate change and biodiversity loss are deeply connected both threatening vulnerable groups, especially women, children, and rural communities in the Niger Delta. The NZNP project seeks to address these challenges through coordinated, inclusive action.

The NZNP Accelerator, one of 11 GEF-8 Integrated Programmes, aims to drive nature-positive, net-zero pathways by investing in ecosystem restoration, clean energy, and sustainable technologies supporting Nigeria’s NDCs & Net Zero target.

Mrs. Aneke Agnes Nkechi, Director of Planning, Research and Statistics and @theGEF Operational Focal Point, welcomed stakeholders to the inception workshop of the Net Zero Nature Positive (NZNP) Project a major step in advancing Nigeria’s climate and biodiversity goals.

Proudly among 12 pioneering countries leading this initiative, Nigeria supported by @theGEF and @UNDP aims to model how climate action and nature conservation can thrive together. “This workshop is a call for bold ideas and strategic collaboration,” she said.

Through NZNP, Nigeria will: Strengthen institutions and biodiversity management -Restore degraded ecosystems -Unlock green investments -Empower women, youth & indigenous communities as key actors in the climate agenda.

She stressed that climate change and biodiversity loss are present realities, not distant threats and the NZNP Project provides a transformative platform to tackle them through integrated, nature-based solutions.
