"Premier" and "Prime Minster were originally interchangeable terms. Ontario had used Premier officially from 1867 (John S. Macdonald) but Mitch Hepburn made PM the official term in 1934. The last in Canada to use PM officially was WAC Bennett in BC who left office in 1972.

I see that "Prime Minister of Ontario" is trending. Bessent is obviously just ignorant but interestingly that actually was the official title used as late as 1971 when Bill Davis changed it to "Premier".

I guess technically he was the last to be in detention. The pretender Perkin Warbeck was detained later but was executed a few days before the earl after they allegedly conspired together to escape.

For those keeping track, I believe this is the first time a pretender to the throne has been detained for crimes by the crown since Edward Plantagenet, 17th Earl of Warwick in 1499.

For a time Meighen was actually Leader of the Opposition -- in the Senate. A position he'd held even before becoming leader. He resigned his senate seat to run in the House.

Instead Conservative MPs Richard Hanson and then Gordon Graydon served as interim Leader of the Opposition during that time. The party leader couldn't even wait in the foyer for tv cameras.

In the 1940 Canadian election Conservative leader Robert Manion lost his seat. His successor Arthur Meighen then lost a by-election. John Bracken was next but waited until '45 to run. For over 5 years no Conservative leader sat in the House and none were Opposition Leader.

Justin Trudeau saving the Green Party from a wipeout by breaking his electoral reform promise and seeing them fall below the proportional threshold.
Program note: Liberals: 43.7% of the votes, 49.3% of the seats Conservatives: 41.3% of the votes, 42% of the seats BQ: 6.3% of the votes, 6.4% of the seats NDP: 6.3% of the votes, 2% of the seats Greens: 1.2% of the votes, 0.3% of the seats https://t.co/l7UH30MQko

This appears to be the 12th straight Canadian election where the left wing parties collectively got more votes than the right. 1984 was the last time that didn't happen.

For people keeping track, in '21 the Conservative vote was about 75% of the Liberal vote in the Maritimes+Newfoundland. It's currently at 81% (including Iles-de-la-Madeleine). That's something but I'd hold off on writing national narratives for now.

The lesson here is to always drag your feet. If Carney had said the process was to give him a hearing before making a decision he'd have been better off. Now he'll still have to wear this even though the guy is gone.

Update: The one true poll is on election day.
@CanadianPolling I guess Conservatives can still say Nanos is the one true pollster. At least for now.

I'm not making any election predictions yet but I want to be the first on record to say Charest would've won.

According to Danish TV2, representatives from the USA have been going door-to-door in Nuuk over the past few days to find Greenlanders who wanted to be visited by Usha Vance. After they failed to find anyone, the visit was cancelled.

Lutnick seems to be projecting American history onto Greenland. The Norse didn't kill people in southern Greenland. There weren't even aware of the far-away Dorset people at first. Contact probably happened after Erik had died and he isn't said to have met them.
