Ecologists seek to understand how species distributions relate to environmental factors, but often these relationships are radically human-altered. @Flinnlab et al use historical data & SDMs to understand the presettlement distributions of forest trees.

Biodiversity loss is not only about extinctions It is also the degradation of ecosystems - supporting a few generalist species, with reduced food webs, & looking the same wherever you go As seen over much of the UK

My first ever opinion piece for the @guardian! In it, I delve into the Wood Wide Web, the rise of scientific myths (including the Great Wood of Caledon), and why we should not fear difficult ideas. https://t.co/KsuSKwChjr

The debate about the degree to which forests and fungi communicate raises the painful question of confirmation bias, says author Sophie Yeo

Is there a #woodwideweb? For @Nature_news I look at the science behind this idea – and how scientists working in #forestecogy, #soils and #fungi feel about popular claims that trees care for each other via a fungal network in the soil

Nature - A popular theory about how trees cooperate has enchanted the public and raised the profile of forest conservation. But some ecologists think its scientific basis has been oversold.

Here's your friendly reminder that the best time to prune a Bradford Pear is any time your saw is sharp, and the ideal cut is horizontal and 4 inches from the ground. This is mostly for you @drdavecoyle.

“We soon learned that far greater threat to the land lay in road-building than in logging the timber.” For the latest @SmithsonianMag, I wrote about the history of public lands road construction and the movement to unmake our infrastructure. #roadecology https://t.co/wMSYRRd67s

My first research experience was in a herbarium @williamandmary. In fact, I got to visit and exchange specimens with many herbaria for that project. I got drawn in to the potential to study ecological history via collections and never looked back.

Great new resource for helping you select what species of trees to plant in your yard! Based on height, growth rate, sun/shade tolerance, lifespan, soil type, soil moisture, climate tolerance, stress tolerance. https://t.co/ikClcCJ31D Thanks @clevemetroparks!
