Gene is a bit of an urban legend, often confused for, as Shad. During those 900 years of banishment prior to the start of MCD s1, most depictions of Shad had been lost or changed to describe him as much more of a demonic looking figure.

So when Gene started terrorizing the countrysides of Ru'uan , people assumed Shad had returned. Which was not the case.
