Sept 9, 2020. It's been 1 year. One year ago today, my 36 yo brother died. Still have his cell in my contact list like I might just text him. Grief is hard. Life is fragile. Be kind to one another. Forever missed.
Today is the anniversary of my father's death. His death was unexpected & shocking to my family. And now my brother too unexpectedly is with my dad in death. This has been the worst year for me personally & professionally. Just normalizing that it is ok to not feel great in 2020.
Huge news! The
#SELECT
trial presented at
#AHA23
is a game changer. Among adults with CVD and overweight/
#obesity
but without diabetes,
#semaglutide
2.4mg/wk reduced MACE by 20%, HF by 18%, and all-cause mortality by 19%! 👏👏👏
It's been 9 months since my brother died. He absolutely loved gardening & had a knack for it. I learned from my SIL that the tomato plant that he planted last spring managed to survive the winter somehow and just sprouted its first tomato too! I am rooting for Tim's tomato 🍅.
I was meeting with some trainees today about general career advice & pulled out one of my favorite algorithms that has personally helped me stay focused at all stages of my career. Stay in the green zone. Remember a "Yes" to something is a "No" to something else. Time is finite.
Heart wrenching news about 1st responders. Two emergency physicians in US already in critical condition from

I nearly cried scheduling this appointment. I can't believe this day is finally here, it has been such a long year. One year ago I hadn't even heard of COVID19 & now my heart is leaping with joy to be vaccinated against this deadly disease. 🙏Just in time for my Friday lab TEEs.
I know H-indexes are not that meaningful & have flaws. But I made it to H-index 60 finally, and after a depressing hard year with so many personal losses, I am going to celebrate this small accomplishment. Next goal is working towards promotion within next 3 yrs before I turn 50.

It has now been over 24 hours since I got my 1st COVID19 vaccine 💉. What are the side effects? How am I feeling? Well, I feel....immensely GRATEFUL. And very HOPEFUL. And anxious for everyone else to get theirs too, especially all HCW. 🙏 Otherwise I feel very good.
Valentines Day is not always a happy day for everyone. Thinking of my sister-in-law who lost her husband (my brother) 5 months ago. I miss him too. And my dad. For those who have loved and lost who might be feeling sad today or alone, I see you.

Last tweet from me on topic, I'm taking a break: If woman advocates for something she deseves (salary, promotion), she is not being competitive, difficult, aggressive. Think implicit bias, would same negative impression if asked by man? (Existing while ♀️ is hard. I'm exhausted).

Many of the brightest & talented clinicians & researchers that I've had the honor to mentor & work with, have been international medical school grads. IMGs typically face more barriers to advance their careers in US & work even harder. Their contributions to medicine significant.
Thread:
There's lots of evidence of discrimination against international medical graduates -- that they are supposedly not as good as US medical grads.
But is it true? Are IMGs not as good as US MGs?
My brother died in Sept 2020. He planted a tomato plant in spring 2020 a few months before his death. Despite being neglected, the plant survived all winter last year, gained renewed strength in spring 2021 & still producing. I've been rooting for

My mother (70+ w/ health problems) got her 1st COVID vaccine dose & I feel this enormous relief. Like a huge weight lifted off my chest. Having lost my father & brother, I didn't realize how much worry I held inside about my mother getting COVID. More happy for her than my own 💉

I am not a full Prof & may never be a full Prof but I have been in academic medicine over 20 yrs & this a great thread. Dont let other people define what is a successful academic life. Figure out what success means to you. Find people who can help (may not be at your institution)
1. Just celebrated 20 yrs as a professor this week, so I’ve been thinking about life in academia.
I have only one piece of advice - know yourself, use that to figure out what success means to you, and find people who will help you achieve that success.

It's been a little over 6 wks since his death. Sometimes I keep thinking it was all just a bad dream. His cell number still in my contact list, I read thru his last texts, still thinking if I text him he will answer back. His son younger than him in this photo.
This paragraph is disgusting. Another man belittling and trying to humiliate an accomplished woman doctor. Yes she holds a doctorate degree. How dare WSJ continue to publish stuff like this in 2020. I am just so tired of it all.
