I'll be giving my inaugural lecture at the LSE on October 30 on the topic of Industrialization and National Identity in Modern Africa. I'll focus on the theories of Ernest Gellner, who first proposed that industrialization generates nationalism. 1/

Great point. The presidents of Ireland, Germany, Italy, Austria, etc. are constitutionally barred from hugging their citizens.

In 1910, Teddy Roosevelt met Emperor Franz Joseph I Teddy asked him to explain his job, and the Emperor simply replied: "The idea of my office is to protect my people from their politicians." It warms the heart to see His Majesty King Felipe VI carrying on this great tradition

Nigeria's Sunday morning news shows were fantastically more open, honest and authoritative about the rise of Kemi Badenoch and the threat it poses than their British equivalents. Incomparably better.

Very interesting new work on the effect of democratization on income in Sub-Saharan Africa, using a variety of techniques to show that there has been a positive impact since the 1990s. Great work!

I am in the job market with a super cool paper investigating the economic/development impacts of Africa’s wave of democratization that swept across the continent in the early 1990s.

You hear this sort of thing a lot, but with no basis, as if there's some unwritten 'right' that money can only be taxed once by the government. (If that's true, then how can you have inheritance tax?) Also, what's morally wrong with taxing money twice when it's progressive?

Never ever understand how anyone can have the right to tax your savings, money that has already been taxed they are taxing again. It’s actually shocking

I assume David Lammy will be publishing his new findings on the Rwandan genocide soon, where he details how 'millions' were killed? (The accepted upper limit of the total number of victims is 800,000.)

🎥 Foreign Secretary David Lammy tells @NJ_Timothy that the way some MPs and protesters are using the terms “genocide” and “annihilation” in relation to Israel and Gaza “undermines the seriousness” of them.

I for one recall getting almost no lessons on basic comparative politics in high school, and that was in a college town. One major problem with American politics is how uneducated Americans are about how politics actually works around the world. End of rant!

The most obvious question any such documentary needs to answer is, if the EC is so awesome, then why is the US the ONLY COUNTRY IN THE WORLD to use it? The fact that the makers didn't even feel they needed to answer this question is a product of poor civics teaching in the US.

Second, I love how, over a course of almost 75+ minutes of pundits defending the Electoral College (including Steve Forbes), there was approximately 5 seconds (literally!) devoted to a discussion of how other countries elect their president.

Short rant: I had the displeasure of watching this 'documentary' on an American Airlines flight on Friday. First, why is AA showing trash like this when there are plenty of more interesting and factually accurate documentaries they could offer?
