El Hierro in the Canary Islands is a self-powered paradise! With EU regional funding, it became the first self-sufficent energy powered island in the world. 🇪🇺

A very nice project indeed, but just a half-truth. El Hierro is self-sufficient in electrical energy only part-time. A large part of it's electrical supply comes from dirty diesel.
@EUCouncil
1. 40% of El Hierro’s electricity comes from thermal fossil fuel plants
2. Price per kWh is hugely expensive. Order of magnitude 300-400 €/MWh
In summary: not self-powered, not paradise, and financially unsustainable
@EUCouncil
Check the production stats for 2019. Self sufficiency with 100% renewables has been achieved on specific days. The record is 596 hours between 13 july and 9 august in 2019.
