🟢We will not mine any coal. Our proposal is to remove the coal within the spoil sat on the surface of the tips to remove the risk of instability, water pollution and tip fires, but any coal left underground will stay there. Watch our video here:

❓We often get asked why government can’t remediate coal tips instead of a private company. Coal tip remediation is extremely specialist work. 🟩 Regardless of who pays for the remediation, the loose spoil needs to be removed, so professional remediation experts are required.

We have set out proposals to fully remediate the Bedwas Tips at no cost to the taxpayer by selling the small proportion of coal in the spoil. This can be used in industrial processes to replace virgin coal currently being imported from South Africa and Indonesia.

This brings the total spent on coal tip safety in this Senedd term over £ 100 million, but with over 2,500 coal tips in Wales, demand will significantly outstrip available resources. Full remediation of the two category D Bedwas Tips is estimated to cost around £60 million.
