Medical school admissions metrics that are linked to wealth: 📕 MCAT, GPA 📕 Admission to prestigious university 📕 Ability to perform substantial amounts of unpaid/low wage labor (volunteering, scribing, shadowing, research assisting) 📕 Cost of apps https://t.co/pS5cuPa5A0

@DocLibertarian @trpender @Jared_Boyce @statnews @WixsonMatt @BurgartBioethix @ReginaRoyan @drchadb @UMichAnesthesia @jbcarmody @ShikhaJainMD @MDaware @thehouseofpod You’re confusing merit with things that are largely a direct reflection of generational wealth and resources from birth. Give those same resources and wealth to those from low SE backgrounds and watch how magically more academically “gifted” ppl will emerge.

I think the fact that only 6% of resident physicians would qualify for financial hardship/relief is indicative of a larger problem with the medical school selection process.

Of course, this year there were >50,000 residency applicants. In other words, only around 6% of all residency applicants will receive any reduction in their application costs.

I will never understand a consultant that, after introducing myself on the phone, they just respond with “what” or “yep”. Like have you ever spoken to someone in your entire life? What is that ? Lol.

Today at church I wore my National Latino Physician Day shirt. A white woman asked me about it and then proceeded to say “when I see shirts like that, I wish I could make a white physician shirt or make white physician day” she is not a physician. I’m shocked. Quiet. 🧵

Hearing about a Latina who has a 3.5 GPA (having to work 20 hours a week) at an Ivy League school and is being actively discourage from applying to medical school by advisors is exactly the reason why this system is biased, inequitable and needs to be reconstructed. That’s coming

Many in medicine are perplexed by the lack of collective efforts to effectively advocate for improved wages for medical trainees. Elephant in the room…very few in medicine have ever had anything close to approximating financial insecurity, and probably just don’t care enough.
