New paper in @IPSR_Journal with Tracey Raney! Drawing on the reforms in the Canadian Senate, we argue that institutions in flux can be regendered by the people within them: amidst all the changes, Canadian senators successfully cemented new feminist rules.

My new op-ed with Rebecca Wallace about the lack of gender parity in Carney’s new cabinet. We hope gender-equal cabinets will be expected by Canadians, not just a one-off under Trudeau. @InformedOps is calling for us to @BalancePowerNow .

The gender dynamics here are fascinating, and I don’t think it comes down to one man’s ideology, but it connects to societal conversations we’re having about women’s role in the political sphere. In the words of one political woman, “you exist in the context.” /6.

Stereotypically, our society expects women to be accommodating in the workplace. I wonder if our expectations of women played a role in JT asking CF to leave on Friday and then go out and do the dirty work on Monday, the reward for which is getting thrown under the bus. /5.

Feminism isn’t something you say, it’s something you do. So some actions might be more feminist while others are not feminist, and there’s a lot of grey area for debate. /4.

My point is that while it’s hard to call the man who appointed a gender-equal cabinet misogynist, the cabinet does exist within broader (gendered) social and professional contexts. We see gendered dynamics creep in everywhere, even from avowed feminists. /3.

Ostensibly, the purpose of appointing a gender equal cabinet was to signal that the PM values women’s perspectives in government. But the women who leave are reporting that their perspectives were not respected. That puts the feminist commitments of the gov’t into question /2.

I think it’s more nuanced than this. I agree that it’s disingenuous to say this incident is evidence that JT’s a misogynist. Of course the PM should be able to shuffle his cabinet. What is raising red flags is that this type of friction keeps happening with women ministers. /1.

My unpopular opinion is that a prime minister has to be free to move his ministers wherever and whenever he chooses. Twice now, female cabinet ministers have resigned because they didn't like the new position they were offered. 1/.

I had such an amazing time at #ECPG2024 in Ghent! @EricaRayment and I presented our findings that women’s groups have been lobbying Canadian senators more following the reforms to reduce partisanship. We also had beer, waffles, fries. And wonderful conversations with colleagues!
