Unfortunately, the review overexaggerates the effectiveness of firearms legislation in Australia and Canada, leaves out some important studies, and does not rigorously examine these articles.

A recent review article in Health Policy Open, entitled “How firearm legislation impacts firearm mortality internationally: A scoping review” claims that Australian and Canadian firearms legislation is associated with reductions in homicide and suicide by firearms.

A recent review article in Health Policy Open claims that Australian and Canadian firearms legislation is associated with reductions in homicide and suicide by firearms. Unfortunately this is false, my peer reviewed response: https://t.co/3bkdIkHDgv

My study in 2011 looked at those reasons and they are an aging population and socioeconomic factors. The vast majority of Canadian studies and Australian studies agree with my research.

That is what figure 1 and 2 show. Only someone not trained in science would think that firearms deaths dropping means legislation worked. There could be other reasons deaths are dropping and there are.

It showed that suicides by firearms dropped but is made up for by an equal rise in suicides by other methods. Meaning no overall change in suicide.

And the study shows that homicides by firearms dropped the same as homicides by other methods meaning the legislation has no effect.

The modified approach compares suicide and homicide by firearm against other methods and then uses statistics to compare the before and after rates following legislation. The theory is that if legislation works deaths by firearms should drop but deaths by other methods shouldn't

What can be said about this? The Negin report leaves out a great deal of evidence regarding the effectiveness of Australian gun control and homicide rates. The MCC never hears this evidence despite multiple offers from other researchers to present.
