Sheffield based academic clinical fellow in cardiology/IMT. Grumpy about most things. Trying to live a bit more.
Sheffield, England
Joined June 2019
From my extensive experience as a resident doctor (14 yrs) & my limited experience as a consultant mentor/ES/CS/dTPD (5 yrs), fundamentally what resident doctors want is to feel like someone gives a shit about them and their training. Otherwise it’s a bleak & dark place…

You know where else I would look? The inquests, the inquiries, the discussion at the wakes, the relatives, the settled claims and the people who died before their case was brought to court….
As we write our ten year plan to reform the NHS, we will involve: 👫 The people who use the NHS 🩺 The people working in it 🧑🔬 And the people driving the future of medicine It will be their plan and the biggest consultation in NHS history will be launched with the PM tomorrow!

Very few people realise that the vast majority of hospice and palliative care is provided by charity - not by the NHS. I think this is a national scandal. Please RT if you do too 🙏
In this interview with @skynewsniall, Dr Rachel Clarke (@doctor_oxford) emphasises the need to prioritise quality end of life care. Regardless of Parliament's decision on assisted dying, fixing the funding of our struggling hospice and end of life care system is essential.

We at @wellcometrust have joined many UK science organisations in signing a letter to the chancellor ahead of the budget at the end of the month. It is crucial that the UK has stable, predictable investment in R&D, not wasteful stop-start funding. https://t.co/S1LXYDI4Md via @ft

We can't continue to punish work with marginal rates of over 60%. It's inequitable and economically damaging. Ms Reeves should call time on high marginal rates.

Patient safety bodies to be overhauled, @wesstreeting announces. Certainly worth doing, but if the issue is how orgs keep patients safe we need a review of NHSE policy and professional regulators like NMC and GMC. #PatientSafety

Research in the NHS is not a luxury. To unlock its benefits for patients, the NHS and the economy, we also call for: ✅ Protected time for research leaders in the NHS ✅ A reversal in the decline of clinical academics ✅ The use of patient data as a resource good for all
Clinical research is good for patients, the NHS and the economy. But in a health service under pressure, it’s often seen as important but not urgent. Our new briefing outlines why embedding research is fundamental to transforming the NHS. ⬇️ https://t.co/eP9XTsxyl7

Big problem across the board in civil service from finance to computing to management and diplomats. Same is at the root of much of doctors pay issues over the past 2 years. The problem with 'new money when you deliver improvements' is your best staff have gone elsewhere!
This is a particular problem for HMRC. A senior investigations specialist at HMRC could walk into a job in the Big Four for a lot more £. It’s become unsustainable. The FCA pays higher than civil service rates. HMRC should too, for roles with a private sector equivalent.
