@DrSarahJarvis Could be plant density - the higher the density the more deformed the roots. Also could be heavy clay soil or obstructions in the ground, like stones. Carrots need space to grow straight. And they don't like high doses of nitrogen. Or it could be pests.

@BlueBicycleComm We grew them In gowbags with multi-purpose compost so stone/ soil density not the problem. Could be the nitrogen - all a learning curve!
