Delighted that my book, THE CULTURE TRAP, has been published by @OxUniPress! This ethnography centers and celebrates Black youth in London and NYC schools, and shows that the use of culture to explain Black students' success or failure in schools is not only tricky; it is a trap!

This is such good reporting from the @harvardcrimeson: There are about 27,000 high schools in the U.S. Over the past 15 years, 1 in 11 students at Harvard have come from just 21 high schools. So 9.1% of Harvard students come from 0.07% of US schools. @nytdavidbrooks

My first #NewPubAlert! This project began when I was still a Master’s student so it’s truly surreal to see the end result, and the gratitude I hold for ⁦@DerronWallace⁩ as my mentor and co-author simply can’t be expressed within 280 characters.

scholar A gets rejected from top journal. A noticed scholar B was recently published in same journal. A is 😡 and rationalizes racial resentment behind methodology. A wants to speak to the manager of sociology. A will insist this has nothing to do with “race.” A+B=C. Solve for C.

(1/2) We need more attention to selection bias in qualitative research. A new study in a top sociology journal examines "how young people experience policing," but it draws only on interviews of youth in an organization devoted to abolishing the police, one that bombards...

JD Vance blamed school shootings on Mexican immigrants bringing in guns and then changed the subject to gun violence in big urban cities (black folks). The one issue that is almost singularly about white men gets blamed on people of color.

This exchange should be studied for a long time. The interviewer read the book, not to gain new insight, but to get angry that it wasn't written from the perspective he preferred. He expected Coates to crumble under his onslaught. But Coates didn't. That's what makes it powerful.
