I was still a resident when you called to say you were having chest pain. I flew home and was with you when you were diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. You never got to see me graduate Mom, but you are with me on every shift. #ShareAStoryInOneTweet

I was able to devote my complete attention to my patients and their families. My patients felt heard, respected, and valued. I felt like a good doctor today.

Med students, don’t underestimate how much you help your residents! Was drowning today and my med student constantly reminded me of scans that resulted and things to check on throughout the day. The little things help so much 😭 you matter as a med student!

New data: The suicide risk for female physicians is 76% higher than the general population. Women in medicine need your support. We need reasonable workloads, adequate support, respect from colleagues, equitable pay, & work environments absent of discrimination & harassment.

As a research mentor, it’s common to see someone whose project is not working but they are doing all the right things to troubleshoot. Don’t underestimate the power of saying “Even though your experiments are failing, you are still succeeding at research.”

Kintsugi, the Japanese art of pottery repair, uses gold to fill the cracks of broken pottery. The gold accentuates the cracks, drawing attention to them, and perhaps making it even more beautiful. What would happen if we were to embrace our imperfections?

The best place to relax is near water. After just 2 minutes of viewing water outdoors, blood pressure and heart rate drop. It's more calming to look at a lake, pool, or stream than trees or grass. Beaches are popular for a reason. Wider bodies of water bring more tranquility.

I know it sounds radical; I know it sounds utopian. But it exists in many other countries around the world. We can and we must create a system in which people can go to any doctor they want, any hospital they want, and not have to take out their wallet.

I'm often asked about how stressful it is to work in the emergency dept. I answer yes, but not for the reason ppl think Patients near death when minutes matter...that's not stressful...it's what we do A system that inadvertently makes work more difficult is why it's stressful

Why is vacation time "pretend time off" for doctors? My latest piece for @npr

What's a typical vacation activity for doctors? Work. A new study finds that most physicians do work on a typical day off. In this essay, a family doctor considers why that is and why it matters.

Open for comments! US Health & Human Svcs is proposing a new rule: beginning Oct 1 2024, hospitals would have to electronically report information about COVID, flu & RSV on a weekly basis. This info is critical to tracking/forecasting. Submit your comment: https://t.co/uHzvv8cO0M

“Our emergency licensing board exams don’t test us on ‘Massachusetts medicine’ or ‘Texas medicine.’ We have a national standard of practice. Emergency physicians in all states need access to the full range of stabilizing treatments for the full range of conditions we see.”
