My young friends,
I know that it's enticing to be called CMO and CPO with just one to two years of experience in your career.
I'd say, optimise for functional job titles (Marketer, Designer, Product Manager) at the beginning of your career and let it grow (Snr Marketer, CMO).
The former usually occurs when you are in a small company that doesn't have the capacity to hire really senior people that can help the company scale, and even you to grow.
At that point, you are CMO/CPO but with Analyst salary.
One day, the company grows (or not, cause many die) and they need to hire the real seniors for the growth phase.
But they are in a dilemma:
- Do we stick to you/the team over this new senior
- Do we lay you off?
- Do we give the senior hire, Chief CMO 😂 ?
It's always messy.
This
People be giving C suite out anyhow.
I believe even CEOs should grow into their roles.
That you have the vision doesn’t make you perfect for the CEO role. At the beginning, you are visioneer, team lead or idea lead at best.
Let’s not talk about IG CEOs without a board 🌚
