He is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in the United Kingdom, a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales, and has had an entry in Who’s Who since 2011.

His publications include (with Ken Booth) The Security Dilemma: Fear, Cooperation, & Trust in World Politics (2008); Saving Strangers: Humanitarian Intervention in International Society (2000); & Trusting Enemies: Interpersonal Relationships in International Conflict (2018).

Nicholas J. Wheeler is Professor of International Relations at the University of Birmingham. He is a non-resident Senior Fellow at BASIC where he works on the Nuclear Responsibilities Programme.

5. Territorial control is paramount in international relations; Venezuela strives for regional dominance. 6. A case study in identity, security, and prestige, but security prevails; it heightens concerns in Latin America about international safety.

3. Internal politics intertwines with international posturing; past disputes echo real consequences, as seen in the Falklands. 4. Global politics is a two-level game; domestic and international politics merge, evident in recent conflicts like Ukraine, Azerbaijan, and Venezuela.

We move on to Jan Ruzicka, DDMI director and expert in security studies, with 6 points:.1. The Caribbean, pivotal in history, nearly witnessed global catastrophe; seemingly minor issues can escalate globally. 2. Democratic peace theories underestimate potential for violence. .

"This seems to be a product of internal politics of Venezuela, and Maduro wanting to prop up his own political standing."."This is about trying to rouse a nationalist sentiment, support for Maduro and his political party".

"What's important to most nations in Latin America is trade. And trade means peace. Disruption in the Caribbean is not in their interests". "Venezuela has the biggest oil reserves in the world, and had no reason to start trying to grab more oil.".

We move on to Lucy Taylor, who says "it's really important that we take Caribbean and Latin American politics seriously. Will this turn into a new flash point for IR? Venezuela is standing alone in this and has had no support from other Latin American nations".

"From a Caribbran perspective, what is the most concern is that since the establishment of Caricom, there has always been desire to maintain the Caribbean as a zone of peace".
