Today's 12z op ECMWF and EPS mean both show the 10mb U wind turning negative, meaning a change to an easterly wind direction over the polar regions and an #SSWE with 41 of 50 EPS members (82%) showing this reversal with 11/25 the day with the most negative members. Sudden

European weeklies certainly building the December excitement. It's not a Modoki El Niño winter, so not expecting the same impacts, but seeing December 2009 (DC's snowiest December) on the analog list is entertaining to say the least! Here's the top model analog years and their

Hmm... a strong -EPO is expected right around Thanksgiving. By the looks of that I would expect to be forecasting snow in the Eastern US, frequently. #wxtwitter #wxX #winteriscoming

Latest long range EPS through first week of December continues to be quite bullish on snowfall for the a huge portion of the Continental US. Seen this before, however expected pattern at least first half of December suggests this may be a real possibility. Time will tell

A sudden stratospheric warming event is looking increasingly likely to unfold high in the Northern Hemisphere's skies later this month. Despite the name, it does not imply that it will suddenly get very warm. In fact, it's almost the opposite! This rapid warming and weakening

AMAZING AURORA. Here are some terrific photos of the northern light we've received on this Tuesday evening around the DC region. Clouds are now making viewing tough and it will stay cloudy until around 3a Wednesday. But if you're an early riser, might be worth checking again

BREAKING🚨🚨 The earliest Major Polar Vortex Collapse in history could be unfolding right now... Only three November SSW events have occurred in the past 70 years - two triggered full wind reversals. This one would set a new record.... #polarvortex #winter #forecast #outlook

Why is it so cold in the United States? The frigid air mass flowing southward was in the ice-covered Arctic Ocean a week ago, not far from the North Pole.

I grew up in the Midwest for over 20 years and I can honestly say I've never seen a scene quite like this in Michigan City, Indiana. I've seen foliage at higher elevation but never have I seen peak foliage which such a high impacting Lake Effect snow event. Truly otherworldly.

The ECMWF weeklies have been locked into the idea of a "December to remember" for several days now. Overall things are all clicking and making sense for this to come to fruition. If forecasts can verify we're looking at a series of cold blasts and storm systems much of the

Eyes are on the potential for a stratospheric warming event over the coming weeks. This winter weather wildcard will probably link to the troposphere and contribute to surges of below-average temperatures in the United States during December, with unusual warmth in the Arctic.
