in my math for ChemE's class, we fit ellipses to points outlining the shapes of red blood cells in a microscopy image. the distribution of their eccentricities can reveal disease. it's a fun and practical application of the least-squares approach for an overdetermined linear

Paper rejection, usually. Most one-off grants have acceptance rates well under 50%, so rejection is expected. For a paper that is well-targeted to a journal, acceptance is expected. On top of that, papers require more work than grant proposals (unless you are out there writing

If you don't read enough, you risk reinventing the wheel. If you read too much, you risk paralysis. The art of balancing learning and creation is delicate, especially today, when short-term success is so easily conflated with lasting impact.
