To be fair, plenty of their planners said they'd have a year to get their objectives complete before US industry steamrolled them.
They just failed to listen to these people.

By late 42 the US was down to one operational carrier in the pacific, and the fleet had taken a lot of losses during the Guadalcanal campaign but they we’re replenished thanks to all the new ship that came out in 43

The US spent almost 20 years planning for this, conducting yearly wargames using the entire fleet at sea with scenarios of Hawaii, the Panama Canal, and/or the Caribbean captured by Japan allied with various European powers incl. the UK.
Japan poked that with a stick.

technically more like a year. 5mo later was the battle of Midway where we had only 3 carriers and not much else in terms of operational capitol ships in the Pacific.
