I am honored to announce the launch of the Joint MENASA & Muslim Caucus. It’s humbling to help create a space that uplifts the heritage of the Middle Eastern, North African, South Asian, and Muslim communities in Colorado. This is just the beginning of working together for

Rep. Mike Weissman and myself, along with all Aurora elected officials, have published an oped in the Denver Post about the increasing challenges our Venezuelan community in Aurora are facing. “When immigrants from Venezuela, or any other nation for that matter, arrive in

You seem to be banking on repeating a lie often enough until it becomes the truth. Promoting tired, racist immigration panic is a dangerous game that is hurting our community and our constituents. People are struggling to find housing & employment due to your misrepresentations.

Constituents have been reaching out to council about this slumlord since early last year, well before it was politically convenient to whip up anti-immigrant panic. I wonder what has changed about your interest in this issue.

Council has been briefed repeatedly that no properties have been taken over. The tenants have said the conditions in these apartment buildings are due to criminally negligent management.
The City of Aurora didn't put this statement out. Mayor Coffman and I did with the endorsement of APD. I'd like to point out that we said that "a select few properties do not apply to the city as a whole." Neither Coffman nor myself have ever said that the entire city had been

Hey y'all, 14 days left to make sure we elect Bryan, who consistently shows up and represents the interests of working families--in the classroom, on an picket line, and as an advocate who speaks truth to power.

Local elected officials support House Bill 1313 to build more housing near transit and jobs, including @CoombsForAurora because it "provides a vital framework for local elected officials to enact policies that prioritize housing affordability and equity." #copolitics #coleg

As an addendum to this story, I wanted to write a long-ish thread about the Aurora Public Defender’s Office privatization saga, which is heating up again and now promises to touch even more of our municipal justice system. 🧵 https://t.co/vx4OyNLYPE

State investments into free fare on public transit have increased ridership & reduced gHg emissions. The program works, but it’s slated to end this July w/out legislative action. This session presents a window of opportunity I hope our legislators seize. https://t.co/1RAQVYZ01f

If state lawmakers fund expanding free fare program, it will help Colorado in a number of areas, from pollution to equity.

Behind each eviction is a Colorado family facing uncertainty & instability. A child who has to change schools again. A single parent who has to sleep in her car with her two kids in frigid January temperatures.

I recently spoke with @CityCastDenver about rental assistance and Denver's growing eviction crisis. Last night @DenCityCouncil unanimously supported opening a new family shelter. It is vital to understand that these are two parts of the same issue. https://t.co/lD1JG5cKPw

Pitting one group against another — migrants vs unhoused residents — isn't just bad optics, it's bad policy. You don't get to the goalpost by reshuffling people from one block to the next, or one city to the next, and call it housing. Displacement isn't housing.
Denver's approach to sheltering migrants so they don't end up on the streets is pushing other vulnerable people onto the streets People living at a hotel in Aurora say they were pushed out by the hotel when Denver bought out all the rooms for migrants Now some are homeless

This is pretty obvious political interference in a function that is legally supposed to be independent to guarantee the right to a fair trial and the presumption of innocence.
In another note, council also moved to delay recommended appointments to the public defender commission (including reappointments), which serves to ensure the political independence of indigent defense, as required by state and federal law.
