It goes against everything the
@LGAcomms
stands for one or two elected members to seek to intimidate & threaten other elected councillors.
The strength of feeling from across the party spectrum is as strong as it is clear.
I am seeking advice & consulting on next steps.
I’m over the moon to be elected today by fellow
@LGA_Labour
@LabourCllrs
as the Leader of Labour in Local government - with very strong support from across England & Wales - from every nation & region, from every size & type of council - groups in power and in opposition
It’s one of my greatest honours of my life to be selected by fellow
@Telfordlabour
members to be their parliamentary candidate for my home town.
Telford needs a Labour MP and Britain needs a Labour government so we can deliver for Telford and deliver for Great Britain 🇬🇧
I’m at the A&E at the RSH - I can’t believe what I’m seeing. Lots of People parked up in corridors and in small rooms (including a member of my family) Ambulance crews unable to handover. Staff working so hard but unable to cope!
We stand united - we know that a overnight closure of Telford’s A&E will put lives at risk across all of Shropshire, Mid Wales, Wolverhampton, Dudley, Stoke and Staffordshire.
Add your name here - the government must act.

Her Majesty the Queen sat alone at Prince Phillip’s funeral - because those were the rules.
People stayed away from care homes and hospitals during their loved one final hours - because those were the rules.
I’ve spent the last 12 years in
#LocalGovt
leading locally and nationally, I am delighted to be taking up the role of Chair of
@LGAcomms
in July - working cross party, cross sector, bringing elected members & officers together for the benefit of our communities.
We're delighted to announce that
@CllrShaunDavies
has been elected unopposed as
@LGA_Labour
's nominee to be the next Chair of the Local Government Association
@LGAComms
👏
Shaun will become the first Labour Chair of the LGA since 2014 at the LGA General Assembly in July
Thank you so much to my friend
@RachelReevesMP
for coming to
#Telford
tonight. I can’t wait for Rachel to be a chancellor on side of Telford & on the side of Britain 🇬🇧
Today is my last day as
@LGA_Labour
Leader as I head off to become the Chair of
@LGAcomms
-it’s been a blast! Thank you to everyone I’ve worked with - elected members & staff.
Good luck to
@Nesil_Caliskan
who takes up the new role tomorrow.
Mission accomplished ⬇️✅😉
I have again seen first hand staff & contractors of
@TelfordWrekin
work their socks off right around the clock, just like the weekend &last week
They will carry on. 👏
You won’t know their names but they are fine public servants
I’m proud of our
#Localgov
team! TY!
#floods
Thank you for all of the lovely comments.
In Telford we have a MP with a 11,000+ majority - the challenge to overturn that majority will be massive but
@Telfordlabour
& I will give it our all to make it happen.
You are very much welcome to Telford to help too 🙏🏻
I am sorry.
As at 23rd Dec 139 Telford and Wrekin residents have died with COVID this year. Those who have died age between 41 to 100 years of age. This number will grow.
How dare you be so dismissive of Telford and Wrekin lives and the feelings of those left behind.
Today I’m launching my campaign to become the next Leader of
@LGA_Labour
Together, we can make
@UKLabour
the strongest party in local government & deliver change for our communities

Hi Lucy, in fact it was
@TelfordWrekin
staff and contractors who deployed the the barriers as EA were stretched elsewhere. The Council has also secured more sandbags due EA shortages.
I hope you will join me in thanking our staff, many of which live in Telford and Wrekin.
Proud of our
@Telfordlabour
&
@wrekinlabour
Team!
Thank you to our communities for putting your trust in us to Invest,Protect & Care for our Borough.
Our mission resumes today!
We did it!- the community sent the message and London finally woke up!
Telford’s A&E will not close overnight!
The community battle to retain our A&E and Consultant Led Woman & Children Unit continues.
Some good news on Telford and Wrekin vaccination site.
Mass site at the TIC by the end of this month.
We want this to be brought online faster and will do all we can to support the government to make this happen.
The process has been far to slow for us.
Details soon
We had the absolute pleasure of welcoming The Princess Royal to Telford
Engagement included a visit to the Railway Station Bridge and then a visit to Telford Town Park where she met with volunteers,gardeners & staff
Thank you, HRH for your continued support to us as a Town.
Hearing from councils across England and Wales the total disgrace that local media outlets were sent press releases yesterday afternoon with embargoes until 1030pm on the outcome of Levelling up bids with councils told hours after the embargo expired.
Total disrespect.
⬇️ We have some amazing news! ⬇️
OFSTED have rated our Children Services and they say we are OUTSTANDING 🥳
✔️ The first Council outside London to go from Requires Improvement (2016) to OUTSTANDING!
✔️ The only Council in the West Midlands and North West to be OUTSTANDING!
On behalf of
@GreatDawley
and
@TelfordWrekin
, I was honoured to welcome The Duke of Edinburgh to Telford yesterday. The Duke visited the Dawley Squadron at the Royal Yeomanry, Dawley Reserve Centre and the Army Reservists and then on to Dawley Town Hall.
Honestly, this brought a tear to my eye
When we get the other side of this, I hope all schools will invite their year 11s (and year 6s) back so they can have their proper leaving day!
Good luck to the thousands of
@LGA_Labour
@LabourCllrs
& candidates putting their names forward tomorrow with the intention of making their part the world better. 🌹
Also big shout out to all our
@UKLabour
volunteers and staff supporting candidates. 👏
Nothing great is easy!
My absolute honour to address
@UKLabour
on behalf of
@LGA_Labour
@LabourCllrs
- highlighting the hard work of over 6,000 Labour Councillors - whether in power in opposition who work day in and day out to support their communities.
As part of
#LetsGetTelfordHealthy
&
#WorldMentalHealthDay
I wanted to challenge myself.
Today I did my first 10 mile run, at the start of March I would find walking 10 miles a big challenge!
Be proud! Be kind.
Given the improving working relationships between
@TelfordWrekin
and
@ShropCouncil
, it has been agreed that I will become Leader of both Councils with Peter Nutting becoming my Deputy.
This has been a long time coming, but I think everyone will agree it’s a great move!
I’ve written to Lucy Allan every week for the last 5 weeks - she hasn’t responded once.
Every MP and Council Leader takes part in a weekly phone call with health org- she fails to join in.
Since taking up a Govt job it’s been all snide tweets and no local action
We need to question if this is best use of taxpayer funds at this time of national crisis - wish council would engage with elected representatives of residents before spending our money
Lucy is my MP.
She is the only Shropshire MP who is a member of the government.
She has refused to join in on cross party weekly phone calls and efforts of MPs, Councils, and health bosses here in Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin.
Disappointed to see
@Keir_Starmer
attacking NHS England at this time. They are doing their best in these exceptional times - it doesn’t help them do better.
To represent Telford in Parliament is a dream job and I’ll redouble my efforts to become the next MP for Telford - so I can stand up for Telford.
Although we’ve had many disagreements I wish
@lucyallan
well for the future.
We've won Local Authority of the Year at
@TheMJAwards
! I'm so incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved and would like to thank everyone who played a part
#MJAwards
We’ve only gone and done it! We’ve won the big one…Local Authority of the Year at
@TheMJAwards
Proud to work hard on behalf of our residents

7 days ago, 22 new
@LGA_Labour
Council leaders, 537 new
@LabourCllrs
We won wards for the first time
Our best ever results in wards and councils.
We lead councils we’ve never held before
Now time serve & deliver from Project Victory to Project delivery
I’m delighted the 5 sleepy Conservative MPs for Shropshire finally woke up to the issues with the vaccine appointments - 2 weeks in (nearly 10,000 missed opportunities to vaccine people)
No doubt the solution is likely next week - just in time for them to claim credit
Teams are preparing to go out to deliver packed lunches to those who are eligible for free school meals. If you're eligible but don't receive a packed lunch by 2.30pm call 01952 383858. This is a temporary emergency provision to support families this week.
#Bekind
We are in Telford and Wrekin. The council has paid for PPE because the govt didn’t provide it.
We’ve got kids on waiting lists to get into schools - because the govt doesn’t match sound bites with cash.
You are in government - stop protesting and start governing.
We must all fight tooth and nail to get children back to school. Disadvantage and inequality will be exacerbated and entrenched for a lifetime if we fail to educate our children.
We are smashing it.
We could easily complete all 9 Cats and all over 18s within the next 8 weeks if government allow us to move forward.
Local NHS, Local Council, blue light services and military all working together to deliver.
Not a Serco contract to be seen!
We get lots and lots of emails, letters and phone calls
@TelfordWrekin
BUT
This is one of my favourites! ❤️
I’ve of course protected the personal details of our resident- but the message has 😢!
Be kind 🌈
Proud of what we do and how we do it here in
@TelfordWrekin
66 food parcels have now been delivered as part ofthe Government scheme to help the most vulnerable. Vulnerable people who are self-isolating can also seek support from the council:
I can't wait to get to work as the new Chair of the LGA, representing over 337 local councils and getting the best for our communities.

This morning I’ve written to
@MattHancock
asking him to urgently intervene into Future Fit - which will see the downgrade of Telford’s A&E and Consultant Led Women and Children Unit. I’ve also asked him to meet me in Telford urgently.
Myself &
@CllrShirleyR
have been meeting with various
@TelfordWrekin
staff and partners today. We will be making a statement later this evening.
We want to support schools, pupils and families and not add to confusion caused by the lack of national leadership on this issue.
Today only 210 people are booked into the Telford International Centre - it has a capacity today of 1,500 jabs a day and can rise to 10,000 jabs a day.
Yet national red tape is getting in the way.
Brilliant to be in Tamworth with the outstanding
@UKLabour
candidate Sarah Edwards - speaking to residents here and in the villages - there is a real sense for the need for a fresh start! Sarah will be a brilliant MP on the side of her residents in Parliament!
Tomorrow
@TelfordWrekin
flags will fly at Half-Mast & Southwater 1 will be lit blue all weekend in his memory and in recognition of the work he did to support our NHS.
#ThankYou
#SirCaptainTomMoore
This is so frustrating
@MattHancock
- on TVs screens heavily hinting Tier 3 areas (Telford and Wrekin) will move to Tier 4. But falling short on confirming the move.
If this decision is going to be made then we must he told now - so businesses and others can plan.
The start of another long day ahead!
⚠️ We expect the river ⬇️ over the next couple of days:
⚠️ Repairs to the barriers will then be attempted.
⚠️ Likely more bad weather over the weekend into early next week - with MORE flooding
⚠️ Harry the dog is back with his owners 🥳
Tonight on
@BBCNewsnight
I explained why
@Telfordlabour
@wrekinlabour
@LGA_Labour
Councillors across England simply wouldn’t sleep at night whilst children went hungry over half term & during the hardest winter in living memory
We will work with our communities to feed children
As
@LGA_Labour
start it’s process to elect a new Leader of
@LGA_Labour
@LabourCllrs
to replace me in July I wanted to say a massive thank you to all my friends & colleagues for their support, most of all the amazing LGA Labour & Labour Party staff who are first class! 🌹🙏🏻
I am being told that Telford and Wrekin residents, in their 80s&90s are having letters advising them to book an appointment online to get their vaccine in the West Midlands &North of England
I’ve raised this with Health Authorities who are investigating
This isn’t good enough!
Such a brilliant
@WMLabour
Conference - the vibe, the passion, the ideas and the belief is accompanied by a razor focus to win.
Also a standing room only breakout of
@LGA_Labour
@LabourCllrs
with
@lisanandy
- clearly setting out the plans to work in partnership with
#LocalGovt
🏴 Happy St George’s Day 🏴
Surely, now is the time for Labour’s policy that St George’s Day should be a Bank Holiday is adopted.
We’ve got the lowest number of bank holidays in Europe!
Have a great day!
When it matters to our community, it matters to us.
Yesterday I took over 22k signatures to the heart of Government, calling on the Prime Minister & the Health Secretary to urge them to reconsider plans to downgrade emergency services at the PRH. Thank you to everyone who signed.
Just been told a Junior Government Minister will visit Ironbridge - to “tour” the area with The Environmental Agency.
Hasn’t asked to meet with me or the Council!
Just for the photographs! Ironbridge residents have rejected that type of politician before!
It goes against everything the
@LGAcomms
stands for one or two elected members to seek to intimidate & threaten other elected councillors.
The strength of feeling from across the party spectrum is as strong as it is clear.
I am seeking advice & consulting on next steps.
Good news!
80% of over 80s in
@TelfordWrekin
have now had their first jabs.
All older person care homes have now been visited at least once for the first jab.
Hundreds of adult and social care staff have had their first jab.
February - will be groups 3 and 4 & maybe 5 🤞🏻
It’s now certain that the Government will place Telford and Wrekin into Tier 2 from the early hours of Saturday morning.
This will ban household mixing.
More information from government is expected in the morning
Stay safe. Be kind.
I do hope
@UKLabour
members will resist the self indulgence of yet again talking to one & other, instead turn our attention to listening & responding to the people who we seek to serve & represent
We need to earn the right to be listened to, to do that we must show we can listen
I honestly can’t believe that on a call with
@RobertJenrick
this morning - it’s been confirmed there are no plans to top up funding for councils to provide discretionary grants for those who must self isolate. Have they learnt nothing?!
@LGA_Labour
Conservative record in government
Highest Tax Burden since the War
Highest mortgage rates since 2008
Highest inflation since 70s
Lowest growth rate for a generation
Longest ambulance waits - ever
Biggest assault on wages - ever
They have failed - General Election now
Congratulations to Lord Cllr Kuldip Sahota, former Leader of
@TelfordWrekin
on his induction to the House of Lords today.
I know you will do yourself, your family and the community proud
@LGA_Labour
@LGAcomms
Now all results are declared I want to say a massive thank you and well done to our amazing staff
@TelfordWrekin
! You’ve done us proud!
See you all Tuesday - we’ve got lots of work to do!
.
@TelfordWrekin
has written to each GP practice area to ask what support they need to go faster - once the vaccine is delivered to them.
Together, we will do this.
Grip and focus required.
So looks like a the pressure of last 24 hrs will lead to change locally
I’m hearing over 60s will now be invited to take up their jab.
We also need to see a wider definition of health & social care staff adopted locally like in other areas of England. (Pls)
I’m delighted that 1 in 5 people in
@TelfordWrekin
have now had their first jab.
Well done to NHS staff working with
@TelfordWrekin
!
But I know many are continuing to wait. We need to go further and quicker.
We have local capacity to get to 10k a day.
Lets get to it.
Back in March we were honoured to welcome HRH Queen Camilla as she unveiled the plaque for our new Veteran’s Trail. This wonderful new addition opened today in
@TelfordTownPark
to permanently honour our service men and women. I look forward to visiting with my family very soon.
3! Green Flags for Telford!
For the first time, Telford has 3 Green Flag parks. The national quality mark for parks.
✅ Telford Town Park retains
✅ Dawley Park gains a green flag
✅ Hartshill Park gains a green flag
We want to go further too!
👀
Councils going ‘bankrupt’ were as rare as ambulances taking 10 hours to get to you.
Both a result of a decade or more of under investment in public services and lack of public sector reform.
Thank you so much for all the kind messages about becoming
@LGA_Labour
nominee to be the next Chair of
@LGAcomms
- the hard work of so many over so long has led to a special day for the Labour family & I am honoured to be your nominee.
Important to say, almost every single public body, NHS, police, local government, blue light services haven’t had any advance notice of this. We will watch together.
Public bodies and the private sector will now need to respond immediately.
This isn’t the way to run a Country
Between 730pm last night and 8am this morning 35 Ambulances went to PRH with poorly patients - each one of these would be diverted to Wolverhampton or Stoke if the overnight closure comes in.
@MattHancock
we need a urgent Government backed rescue plan!
I’ve been standing up for Telford locally as an elected Labour councillor & council leader since 2011, now I am ready to stand up & serve Telford in Parliament, if you would like to get involved, find out more or donate please visit my new website ⬇️
.
@TelfordWrekin
spends millions of pounds picking up litter and ensuring our Borough is clean!
The annual clean of the A442 (EP, Queensway) is part of that investment.
But if people didn’t drop litter imagine what we could do with that money instead?!
As the new
@LGAcomms
Chair, I wanted one of my first meetings to be with
@michaelgove
so that we could talk through the issues critical to local government. I look forward to championing the important work councils do in the weeks and months ahead.
