It's open! Thanks for coming out, Waco! What a gorgeous day to officially open the Waco Suspension Bridge! Mayor Meek said a few words, the ribbon was cut, and a cattle drive took place across the bridge just as it did when the bridge served as the Chisholm Trail Crossing.

Despite his status & lack of combat training, Wacoan Doris Miller operated an anti-aircraft machine gun on the deck of the battleship West Virginia during the attack on Pearl Harbor.
He was awarded the Navy Cross for his actions, the 1st African-American to receive the award.

On this day 70 years ago, the most destructive tornado in Texas history devastated downtown Waco.
It killed 114 people, injured almost 600, and leveled homes and businesses. The steel-framed ALICO building was one of the few left standing in Downtown Waco.
