The problem is not the spending, it's how it's been spent. Chapman $18 mill Hicks $10.5 mill thru'2825 Britton $14 mill Severino $11.5 mill Stanton $29 mill thru '28 Some bad luck, yeah. But in finance bro speak, the Yankees' ROI has sucked, generally.

@ChrisCarlin Nailed it, Chris. Clearly Hal doesn’t want to dump money over money. They’re gonna try the Stick Michael rebuild once more. Cash thought he had it with Sevy, Judge, Bird, Gary, Gleyber and Austin. This time it begins with Volpe, Domingez, Wells and Schmidt. We’ll see.

@alanhahn Can't blame him that much for not wanting to do it -- they just haven't done well developing players. Not a ton of confidence that happens on my end.

@ChrisCarlin Stanton isn’t too bad. Chapman and Britton are killing me. At least Stanton is giving 28 mil a year output imo at least imo or at least close to it

@ChrisCarlin Exactly. Yankees have the highest payroll in the AL. Cashman’s to blame for making this mess

@ChrisCarlin Yankees not trying to unload hicks and chapman contracts seems crazy to me. Yankees should even pick up money if can’t find any takers. That would bring about major salary relief so could make a trade or sign free agent like conforto

@ChrisCarlin Britton contract expiring after this year and he’s likely not pitching this year because of elbow surgery. Stuck with hicks contract for a while and chapman for another year after this I think

@ChrisCarlin You have identified the reason that the Yankees haven't spent big this offseason. They don't want any more bad long-term contracts. The problem is their farm system is never good enough to improve their roster either.

@ChrisCarlin It’s both. Easily can overwhelm with the financial cudgel at their disposal and yet choose not to to overcome the warts of past mistakes. Plus a lot do that is coming off the payroll this year.

@ChrisCarlin Agreed Yanks have overpaid for bullpen pieces but other contracts are good ones: Severino 11.5M - Heaney just signed for 8.5M Hicks 4/40M - S Marte 4/78M Stanton last 3 seasons of deal 19M, 15M, 15M (thanks to Marlins). A healthy year from all and these will look like bargains
