Great to speak at Portsmouth @thisisyourparty meeting last night. Over 100 local people keen to be part of a radical new left party. Despite some hiccups at the top, the grassroots remain committed to building the movement ✊️

On top of 6 MPs, nearly 60 councillors in UK have already expressed interest/support for @ThisIsYourParty, announced intention to affiliate or signed letters as independent socialist candidates. And the party doesn't exist yet. An *excellent* base to build local socialist power.

Portsmouth has fought to protect these services through a decade of austerity. Now, without urgent government support, they could be slashed to balance the books. This isn’t reform—it’s erosion. #LocalGovReform #StopTheCuts

💔 What could be cut to plug the £67 million gap? - Libraries & museums - Community wardens & safety initiatives - Parks & road maintenance - Cultural events & local grants - Youth services & transport subsidies

📉 The new Portsmouth & South-East Hampshire authority is forecast to inherit a £91 million deficit on DAY ONE. Even after reorganisation savings, we’re still £67 million short—7% of the council’s net budget. That’s not just numbers. That’s real services at risk.

🚨 ALERT: Portsmouth’s Local Services at Risk 🚨 Next week Portsmouth City Council will debate merging into a new super-council under the Local Government Reorganisation plans. This would combine Portsmouth with Fareham, Gosport & Havant—but at major cost to local services.

I’m grandson of an Irish migrant, living in one of the most diverse communities in the country. We get along together pretty well with every section of the community making its contribution. Talk of an “island of strangers” shockingly echoes the divisive language of Enoch Powell

It's worth reading Polly Toynbee's critique of Local Government Reorganisation. In Portsmouth we're going to lose our council & it's replacement will inherit a share of Hampshire's £180m deficit, leading to big cuts to local services. https://t.co/SduDmbmUms

Health, policing, housing, crime: Westminster has so much to deal with. How can a flawed reorganisation be a priority?, says Guardian columnist Polly Toynbee

Update on the calls for government to ensure Local Government Reorganisation doesn't result in a return to austerity with Portsmouth jobs and services being cut to balance the books. Including a response from government (if you can call it that). https://t.co/QC07WA0BW8

A Portsmouth councillor has warned that Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) could lead to a return of austerity, resulting in cuts to ‘non-essential’ services.

Did you know about the proposals to merge councils across Portsmouth, Southampton and Hampshire and the resulting prospect of big cuts to local jobs and services? 1/2

Reminder of just how bad the financial outlook is for Hampshire County Council. If statutory responsibilities are transferred to newly enlarged unitary authorities, such as Portsmouth, without a significant injection of new funds, we'll soon find ourselves in a similar place.

Real opportunities in terms of devolution of strategic transport & planning powers for the county area but also major risks that the remaining unitary authorities will be given responsibilities for social care of 10's thousands of extra vulnerable people without adequate funding.

Looks like big local government changes to come across Hampshire in 2024! Abolition of district councils, transfer to Portsmouth and Southampton of unitary responsibilities for surrounding areas, a Metro Mayor and the end of Hampshire County Council? https://t.co/KKm6990qtG

In today's Labour Party if you are on the left and "like" an innocuous post 8 years ago from a group that would later be proscribed you get expelled. If you're on the right and a landlord who fails to provide decent accommodation to tenants you get given a safe seat.

Recent far right activity in Pompey revolved around Charles Dickens ward, one of the most deprived in UK People are right to be angry about lack of decent homes, jobs and public services. But it's the fault of those in power, not working class migrants. https://t.co/JKZRaEGXjW

Of the 10 most deprived areas of the country, 7 saw far-right riots this month. We must call out racism but we must also address deindustrialisation and decline. Communities need investment and a sense of pride. Easy to bemoan populism but it doesn't come out of nowhere.
