celebratory train wrap. Look for our specially-designed, blue-and-yellow rail cars rolling on the Green Line, beginning Monday 11/1!
Thank you to those who voiced concern for the bird that boarded the Brown Line earlier today. We're happy to report that upon reaching its destination at the Armitage Station, the pigeon safely alighted the train. Let this be a reminder, that even those who can fly ride CTA. 😉
Yikes! April isn’t supposed to be this cold. We heard you and we agree: We’re keeping our rail station heaters on, and turning back on the ones we shut off, until it warms up a bit.
It’s not a crime to be homeless. The CTA understands that for too many people, our system—particularly our rail lines that run 24 hours a day—can become a shelter of last resort.
Take a ride back in time with us as we celebrate 100 years of the 4000-series rail cars!
This Saturday, July 29, the historic rail cars will run around the Loop ‘L’ from 10 am to 2 pm.
More:
Due to an unusual (and wonderful!) turnout, we have switched back to boarding the 100-year-old 4000-seried cars from the Pink/Orange side at Washington/Wabash. The 2400s will continue to make all stops.

We're proud to be one of the first transit agencies in the nation to offer on-site COVID-19 vaccines for employees. Our staff have been on the front lines the entire pandemic, and we continue working to provide a healthy commute for them and you.

Chicago, you're on the nice list! 🎅✨
Today, Santa and his elves are making a surprise trip around the loop from 10 am-2 pm for the last time this season.
⏪ Two years ago today, the 1,000-ton Vautravers Building arrived in its new location!
In about 24 hours, the 127-year-old building was moved approximately 30 feet west and 10 feet south toward N Clark Street to reconstruct century-old Red and Purple Line track structures.
Our crews wrapped up the final weekend of track work on the O’Hare branch! We've replaced the 50-year-old crossover that was built with the original Kimball Subway portion of the Blue Line in 1970. These new tracks will help meet increasing ridership demand on the O’Hare branch.
In order to align with State guidance, CTA will no longer be requiring masks on public transit. Those who wish to continue masking are encouraged to do so. Please be kind and courteous to fellow riders as we continue to welcome folks back to the CTA.
The new
#RedPurpleBypass
opens tomorrow, Friday, Nov. 19!
The new Bypass carries Kimball-bound (northbound) Brown Line trains over north- and southbound Red and Purple Line tracks just north of Belmont station to remove traffic jams at this intersection.
We just want to say "thank you" to everyone who took our service this morning. Despite the record-cold temperatures, we understand that people still need to get places and we take our responsibility to get you there very seriously. 🚍🚏🚃✅
On October 31, 1993, CTA opened the Orange Line. 🍊
It was the first completely new 'L' line since the Dan Ryan Line (today's South Side Red Line) opened in 1969.
We can't keep this secret any longer 🤭! Oct 14 🎬 our most popular series “Ride the Rails,” returns in 4k, with updated videos highlighting CTA’s eight rail lines, each seen from the perspective of the rail Operator. Tune in: to watch the magic unfold✨!
ICYMI: On Tuesday, Oct 1, we'll be bringing our 6000-series Heritage Fleet cars out onto the Loop 'L' to say "thank you" to you, our riders on our anniversary! It'll be the first time these cars have been enjoyed by the public since retirement in the 90s!
[Service Suspended] At 6:30pm, service will be suspended on all bus and rail lines at the request of public safety officials. Service is expected to resume tomorrow morning.
October isn’t supposed to be this cold! Like many of you, we’ve already pulled out our heavy coats and hats. We’re also turning on our platform heaters before their normal Nov. 1 date. Nearly every station is on already, and we’ll get to the remaining stations asap. Stay warm!
Forgot your face mask 😷? CTA’s got you covered! We’re debuting a new pilot to dispense free, disposable face masks to help riders without face coverings. Look for dispensers on 200 buses serving 20 routes. Learn more about protecting yourself & others:
New station just dropped! Preliminary design announced in partnership with
@ChicagoDOT
for State and Lake 'L' station, will replace 100-year-old structure with a modern, fully accessible rail hub.
Crews continue to work tirelessly thru the cold to keep your service moving! Overnight, we experienced a track issue on the Blue Line near Harlem (O'Hare). Crews were out quick & finished repairs w/o a disruption, despite brutal conditions. We're grateful for their amazing work!
Meet Mattie 🐶, one of our cutest rail fans! Each day, Mattie gets her owner to take her to the Rockwell Brown Line station, so she can watch the ‘L’ trains come and go. This five-year-old Border Collie mix is a station favorite! Thanks, Mattie, for showing us some love ♥!
Halloween 🎃 may be over but 3 year old Avari deserves some recognition for pulling off this costume ✨! Avari’s dad and aunt work for CTA and it’s no surprise that we found out Avari won the costume contest at a Halloween party this year!
Attention Bus Riders: If you haven’t seen it already, you may soon begin noticing a change to the text on the digital destination signs located on the front of buses – information is now being displayed left-aligned (versus center aligned).
Meet Onisha! She's a CTA janitor with four years of service, but her efforts go beyond cleaning. She provides support to customers and has helped riders safely retrieve their items off the tracks. We applaud Onisha for all her hard work 👏
It is with great sadness we learned this weekend of the passing of Helmut Jahn, an architect whose unforgettable work is part of our architectural history. Works by Jahn/his firm include O’Hare Station w/its colorful waves of glass reminiscent of his work in nearby Terminal 1.
Wednesday we mark 25 years of using color-coded route names on the 'L'! This pic of an early 1993 map (at Illinois Railway Museum) is from when, after swapping South Side's thru-routings to form modern Red & Green Lines, we were about to begin Orange Line service.

🐻Nine mascots from Big Ten Universities surprised customers by taking a ride on the Red Line today. Can you name the schools?
The mascots are in town to promote the Big Ten Network’s Eighth Annual Big 10K race and 5K run/walk on August 11 in Grant Park!
Our crews continue to work all hours of the day to ensure trains, buses and stations are cleaned and disinfected daily.

Ronald Carr has proudly served the city of Chicago for 28 years with the CTA. He's known to provide a train ride so safe and smooth that riders compliment his efforts. If you catch him operating your train in a classic overall uniform, give him a wave 👋
🎉 Today is an historic day for the CTA in extending the Red Line on the Far South Side from 95th to 130th! The RLE project has officially advanced into the next phase of the federal “New Starts” program – a critical step to moving the project closer to groundbreaking.
We're committed to making CTA 100% accessible!
In 1990 about 6% of our rail stations complied with accessibility standards. Today, 103 of 145 rail stations do. With our All Stations Accessibility Program we plan to achieve 100% accessibility by 2038.
