They were even bigger before the "locals" started taking them apart for building materials.
Pre-British Empire, there was, in Egypt, no knowledge or interest in the pyramids.

Reminder that the pyramids used to be covered in white stone and have a gold cap.
They tried to dismantle them to get building materials for mosks.
"They" being the Arab.
Luckily they didn't have the ability and soon gave up

Check out museums in every Country and you'll find artefacts that were questionably obtained. I saw a fair few when I was in Canada..๐
