My column for
@TBNSports
on a Buffalo legend: Rick Jeanneret was more than worthy as our voice for all time.
Some stories from life on the road with RJ and advice to the
#Sabres
: Give the man a statue.
Booger McFarland on ESPN: "Nobody is concerned about football right now. America is concerned about one thing: The health and safety of this young man." Says flatly this game should be over. Amen.
A quick Michigan-Ohio State thought: FOX really needed a far more muted presentation of Urban Meyer. Seriously.....Gus Johnson saying there aren't many men like him, the whole crew talking about "all the things he's gone through"....Just a really tone-deaf, bad look all around.
BREAKING: It is my sad duty to report that Hall of Fame broadcaster Rick Jeanneret, the legendary play-by-play man of the
#Sabres
, has died this evening. The team has confirmed the news.
Cozens on his hit on Matthews: "Just seeing what he did to (Dahlin), it was a really dirty crosscheck and a dangerous cross check. So I decided to go out there and finish my check on him. And obviously a couple of guys didn't like that. But I'd do it again if I had to. " (1/3)
Obviously I've been knee deep in writing RJ stuff and still am. But the fans should be saluted. How sad a night this would have been in a 1/2-empty building. To see you fill the house and cheer for RJ -- and the team -- like this, it feels like the old days. More, please.
#Sabres
Man, McDermott nailed this. The pass to Williams and then calls timeout for a curtain call on last defensive series. A coach who really understood the moment. Bravo, Kyle Williams. A warrior.
#Bills
Last I had heard on
#Bills
was a 29-21 hole.
#Sabres
game was getting to the buzzer so finishing story had my full attention. Didn’t know what was up until I heard roar from back area of dressing room.
Folks, your hockey team is fully invested in your football team.
Lyubushkin: "If you see my statistics, I have not scored a lot. It's always fun. I'm glad to score for Buffalo Sabres. It's my team. It's nice. It's great to be here. Great guys, Unbelievable teammates. Young team, good vibes here. It's a joy to play hockey here."
Just spoke with
#Sabres
captain Kyle Okposo. Loved this: "There are some teams that I prefer not to listen to their feeds, so I don't watch a lot of their games. When I was with the Islanders, I watched a lot of Buffalo because of RJ. He just called such a good game." (1/2)
Craig Anderson said his 11-year-old son went on the Bauer web site and designed his gear for this year. Including the black and red versions. "If anybody doesn't like it, you can take it up with him."

@GoalieGearNerd
An emotional Jason Pominville asked to be excused from an interview with the media to compose himself as the topic was on his potentially last home game with the
#Sabres
. Quite a scene.
Josh Allen just got a standing ovation when showed on the Jumbotron in a suite. They played the Shout song, crowd went nuts. Whole thing.

Arkansas coach Eric Musselman on his Buffalo experience: "I gotta come back I guess in the summer because I had a blast. I had great meals, loved visiting the Bills. All the people there were awesome and I definitely want to try to come to a Bills game without question." (1/2)
Krebs said Buffalo feels like home in Calgary, as compared to Vegas: "There's winter. There's trees around." He said he wants to have kids playing on a backyard rink, at a house with trees. "There's a lot of trees here." Feels like he fits right in, both team and city.
#Sabres
Dahlin: “You can really see we’re brothers in the locker room. We care about each other. We have something really good going on. Everyone wants to win together and it’s fun to be a part of for sure.”
#Sabres
Okposo with some insight on
#Sabres
culture: "We still have guys going out there 25 minutes early today, last practice of the year. That's not normal for this time of year. But it's the norm around here. And that's all that matters: What we do as a group and how we act."
We're now under 10 minutes away from no longer having to see a single television shot the rest of the playoffs of either Bob Kraft or Jerry Jones. And that's glorious.
Cozens pulls no punches: “I think we definitely play way too soft. We’re too easy to play against. We need to get a little FU in our game. We had more of that last year. We’re way too soft this year. I feel we don’t kill plays and we get bullied.”
#Sabres
Granato on Quenneville: "My only thoughts are for Kyle (Beach) and the whole situation, I really can't think anything beyond that. ... I don't have any thoughts other than for Kyle and anybody else that has gone through the hardship of that. I can't think past that actually."
Lindy: “One of my biggest disappointments was not giving RJ that Stanley Cup call. … I can’t imagine what that would have been like. It would have been spectacular.”
#Sabres
Dahlin on
#Sabres
fans vs.
#VGK
: "It was unreal. It's what you play for basically...Vic (Olofsson) scores and you hear the crowd goes crazy. It's just the best feeling. To have them have your back and cheering for you, it's amazing. I can't wait for people to come back for sure."
Repeating what I've written: Krueger should have been fired after the double shutout last weekend against Philly. I have no idea what this organization is waiting for.
#Sabres
Just a reminder: Kevyn Adams traded Sam Reinhart for Devon Levi and a draft pick he turned into Jiri Kulich. There's a chance that might turn out OK for the
#Sabres
ESPN feature right now on Diggs. First sentence: “In the freezing cold of Western New York.” Come on. Be better. Diggs hasn’t dealt with any freezing cold. He won’t tonight either. A hackneyed cliche. This isn’t Antarctica. It’s cold in Chicago and Boston, NY and lots of places.
You'll probably hear this a lot the next 48 hours...If you have tickets Friday for RJ Night, the ceremony starts at 6:40. The gates open at 5. Get here early. Don't get stuck in traffic. Don't be in the beer lines. Be in your seat. The
#legend
deserves it.

My message to
#Sabres
: Looks like at least 17,000 here and maybe more (Yes, I know a bobblehead is part of it). You've been terrible for months. An absolute joke in fact. You're playing Ottawa. And they're here. This market is desperate to be in the league. Get a clue. FIX THIS.
Cozens was the most effusive in the room: "It shows that we're for real. That's the best team in the league right there and we found a way going down five on three. The penalty kill stood on its head and UPL stood on his head and we found a way to come back."
#Sabres
My goodness.
#NYR
coming in with the blowtorch to Player Safety. About time a team stood up for some justice. "A horrifying act of violence" went unpunished. A "dereliction of duty" by George Parros and "he is unfit to continue in his current role."
BRAVO. ABSOLUTE BRAVO.
I'm literally baffled at the level of outrage that the Sabres didn't dump guys for 6th & 7th-round picks and actually want to teach their young guys winning is important. When are you people going to get that message? The Tank is over. It failed. We're not in 2015 anymore. Stop.
Anyone else getting the same sickening feeling that the
#Bills
might actually make the Super Bowl -- and have to beat Tom Brady and Gronk on their new home field in Tampa?
This should not be legal. It's terrible. Totally against what the shootout is supposed to be. Better yet, let's just play 7 minutes of OT and have ties if nobody scores.
This is garbage.
BREAKING: I've learned Don Granato will be the
#Sabres
interim coach and Steve Smith has also been fired. Development coaches Matt Ellis and Dan Girardi are going to be behind the bench as assistants.
Here was my view from up top on April 1, 2022 just after the final buzzer on RJ Night. Listen to the crowd. Pure chills.
You can argue for “Thank you,
#Sabres
” in 1973, but this might be the greatest unplanned, organic moment in franchise history.
#RIPRJ
Alex Tuch wanted to make sure to give props to the
#Caps
for the pregame moment of silence Tuesday in honor of Hamlin. "That was really nice of them and it's a class act. A world-class organization."
#Sabres
The UB women have become a part of mainstream Buffalo. You don't have to be a UB grad, don't have to be a women's hoop fan. You just have to be a Buffalo sports fan to respect what they've done.
Here's the deal: I'm not getting into Covid debates. It's real. The league is shutting teams down and postponing game. They're not faking that. There's no conspiracies. You wackos throw your political mumbo jumbo at me, you're getting muted. Period. And get your damn shots.
Okposo on Cozens' hit: "Obviously, the cross check from Matthews was not good. I don't care that he's their best player. When you do it to arguably our best player, then you're going to get a response. I don't care who you are on the other team."
#Sabres
Still can't believe Owen Power's NHL debut is 90 minutes from home and
#Sabres
don't think it's worthwhile to send their radio/TV crew to the game. What an absolute embarrassment. Disservice to the on-air talent and a total we-dont-care to the fans.
Imagine being a
#Bills
fan from, oh, 1970-2000, and having a 35-0 lead in Miami -- 35-0! -- and thinking there are things they can do better.
This club has quite a ceiling.
The
#Sabres
are 25-11-3 — a 111-point pace — around both sides of that eight-game losing streak when they played without three and four injured defensemen. So when do we come to the conclusion that they’re good?
Man,
#Sabres
taking the ice to "Sabre Dance" is the only way it should ever be. It sounds sooooo good. No stupid rock. No overthinking. Just keep doing it. Every night for the rest of our lives.
Levi: "The puck is going to go in at the end of the day. You're never going to play a perfect game. ... It's the best league in the world. You kind of flip the page. It's going to happen. You've got to love it. It's a little bit of adversity. It's not going to kill you." (1/2)
I'm getting this a lot. Good lord, people.
The franchise leader in victories. The all-time leader in victories in **NHL history** for American goalies. A former Vezina Trophy winner. And people actually don't think he's worthy of having his number retired by the
#Sabres
? Come on.
The coaching has been a stunning disappointment in this one. But this has nonetheless been a great season. It feels like 1988 in Cincinnati. Best team won and went to the Super Bowl but you knew it was not a one-shot chance. There was a lot more coming. Same feeling now.
#Bills
So Jack Eichel could have never imagined when he got traded to Vegas in November that by May they would miss the playoffs AND the coach would get fired. It’s like he never left Buffalo. Heh. Wonder if
#VGK
turfed DeBoer to get Barry Trotz.
Eichel said he took some teammates to Gabriel's Gate on Allen for wings for lunch yesterday (was too far to go to Bar Bill in East Aurora). Spent time last night at Kyle Okposo's house visiting with his family.
#Sabres
#VGK
Granato mic drop when I asked how impressed he was with
#Sabres
at 5-on-5: "I'm not. It's just the way we need to play. That's it. That's how we play and I'm excited that our guys are sensing and feeling how good they can be in taking time and space away playing aggressive."
In relatively short order,
#Sabres
have jumped from 8th in Atlantic to 4th, and from 10 points out of the last playoff spot to four.
There’s 50 games left. There might actually be meaningful hockey in Buffalo this season.
Vegas loses. Bordeleau, the Michigan kid, gets the only goal in the shootout. Eichel one of three stopped by Reimer... Devastating defeat. Up 4-2 with under 3:00 left. They go to Dallas three points back. They lose in regulation and they're out.
