In the 70s, artist duo Helena and Axel van der Kraan made mechanically movable sculptures. This one was gifted in 2018, and Axel was invited to discuss the work’s condition; and look into the placement of the hands, violin (missing here) and violin bow. Practice makes perfect.

"As beautiful as the chance meeting on a dissecting table of a sewing machine and an umbrella." This quotation from the obscure poetic novel 'Les Chants de Maldoror' (1869) was a favourite of the surrealists.

"Zo hoog als de kunst piekt tijdens de oorlog, zo diep is het dal erna." . In de depotpresentatie 'Kunst tussen de ruïnes', over de Rotterdamse kunstwereld van 1940-45, krijgen vergeten en nog nooit vertoonde werken uit de museumcollectie een podium.
