New issue is out! https://t.co/ImgPc6z4Dp Cover is by Lee Fletcher. Together with Williams & Zhou, they show that the structure and biophysics of striatal cholinergic interneurons transform input to output, just like stained glass. Read more here: https://t.co/LlqYPjlDPG

I first started this project in 2017 as an honours student, so it is really exciting to see it published today! Congratulations to everyone involved - especially to co-first authors @rsuarezsaa and @MHMcCullough, and group leader @RichardsNeuro.

The timing of cortical activity onset is also region-dependent. Patchworks of activity appear in the somatosensory cortex several days before waves in the visual cortex. This suggests a rostocaudal gradient of cortical maturation, supported by anatomical evidence.

This allowed us to record neural activity patterns in awake animals and at stages of development equivalent to prenatal eutherian mammals. These experiments revealed that cortical activity is organised in region-specific patterns that are conserved between mice and dunnarts.

We performed two-photon calcium imaging in developing fat-tailed dunnarts, an Australian marsupial. Dunnarts are born extremely immature - at stages equivalent to mid-gestation humans and mice - and undergo most of cortical development outside the uterus, in the mother’s pouch.

Our new paper is out in PNAS! Electrical activity plays important roles in brain development, but begins mid-gestation in humans and mice, making it very difficult to investigate. We recorded the onset of cortical activity in vivo by studying marsupials. https://t.co/WnJHrBTOpe

The development of precise neural circuits in the brain requires spontaneous patterns of neural activity prior to functional maturation. In the rod...

Australian PhD students currently earn far below minimum wage - 25% less than the $39,000 you would get paid in a minimum wage-earning job. This is unreasonable, and we should expect to earn enough to support ourselves during our studies. Please sign this petition.

New paper from the Williams lab is out now! Congratulations to Stephen, Xiangyu and Lee for their amazing work that reveals how dendritic information processing in striatal cholinergic interneurons is powerfully transformed by peptide neuromodulation https://t.co/qHsYfhGFzu

Very happy to finally share this work done as part of my MPhil thesis with @rsuarezsaa in the lab of @RichardsNeuro, available to read now as a preprint in bioRxiv!
Happy to see this work out! Marsupials allow for in vivo studies of cortical development with unprecedented detail 🐨🧠🔬 (1/n) 🧵

Very excited to finally share my first publication! We found that human and rat pyramidal neurons have conserved biophysical properties, however, the larger dendritic tree of human neurons enhances their computational capacity. https://t.co/l0T3p0HVnr

Seriously, pay attention - this is how climate denialists will shift their arguments as outright denial (ie “climate change does not exist”) becomes harder to justify

Scotty saying “the scientists will fix climate change” is climate denial, because climate change is entangled with so many sociopolitical problems. Denying their importance is just a subtle way of denying climate change, and his own personal responsibility.

I honestly don't know if I'll ever get tired of looking at neurons. CA1 pyramidal cells from the rat hippocampus.

Scientists say the closure of the Animal Resources Centre, a major source of rats and mice located in Perth, Western Australia, is a blow to biomedical research.

Morrison & Murdoch want to gaslight Australians into thinking everything is fine. Rubbish. While the world opens up, Morrison's failure on vaccines & failure on quarantine have locked us down. The world sees Australia as a country whose leaders have inexplicably let them down.

Today we mourn the passing of Humberto Maturana (92). A humble genius, whose huge contributions to systems biology, cybernetics, neuroscience, evolutionary theory, epistemology, and social sciences will keep shaping these fields for many generations to come. Haven’t read him yet?
