Oh wow, it's just occurred to me. All those Britpop boys and shoegaze boys, us girls know all their secrets. I literally got told the other day about a doc being made that me and Emma were excluded from because we knew all the stories. Ha! fuck you. I'm gonna tell it all
It's 1am and I'm 55. Absolutely no idea how I made it this far but am fully grateful that I have. Here's 2 photos from summer '94, when I was precisely half this age. They feel like an appropriate illustration of my contrasting feelings as I toast my own good health. Xx
Tomorrow is the anniversary of Chris’s death. I don’t like commemorating it because I prefer celebrating his birthday, to remember him alive rather than dead, but I just want to say that if you ever think of killing yourself, please don’t.
Fab night out in Harajuku with my (2nd) cousin Keigo (Cornelius). I am full as a banana on Korean grub and a bit bleary after my first experience with makkoli, which is my new favourite ever drink 😋
Feel very sad about Terry Hall, whose music I loved since my teens. Here's a rather terrible piece of fan art from 16-year-old me pasted into my teen diary, in memoriam
Look what I found in the attic! Good as new - which is more than can be said for me... 56 today! Gonna spend the day doing one of my favourite things... cooking for friends. 🥰
RIP Sean Connery - legend. My mum (far left) said there was quite the catfight during the You Only Live Twice bath house scene, she got bundled out of the way in the scrum! But he was a real gentleman and a charm to be around.
My mates came to see us support Gang of Four and stood next to Mick Lynch
@RMTunion
- I know some of you will want to pile in and slag him off but can you do it elsewhere because this makes me happy and I just want to enjoy the moment!
sorry sorry, i am being drunk and inappropriate but i am remembering some of the lovely men that i once ever met and i didn't know him particularly well but chris cornell was a real hearthrob sweetheart - Lolla 92 mad wonderful memories
My mum is signing James Bond/Space 1999 memorabilia today at the London Film Fair. Rather more obscurely, she also played 'Doris Takahashi' in the movie Wombling Free, so if you're going, take a Wombles poster for her to sign. It'll totally freak her out
Got sent this by my old flatmate, Geoff - must have been about 20, I reckon. Kids, enjoy your youth while you have it. I haven’t looked that perky in two decades! 😆
Me,
@RachelAGoswell
and Leila - many beers in, 1996. I know it's not hard and it's not clever, but I can't lie, getting pissed with the girls was a fucking good laugh back when my constitution could take it
EMOTIONAL BLACKMAIL ALERT:
My memoir is NOW ANNOUNCED so please retweet this and pre-order it (all the usual places etc) as I am feeling completely terrified of this unknown territory
Apologies in advance for the barrage of self promo coming your way
Just wanna say that not one single bloke I am mates with feels even vaguely offended by the current discourse about male violence. They just feel it's a reality and it needs to be tackled.
As an expression of my growing desperation to be drinking in a pub again, here's a photo of Emma and me at the Enterprise in Chalk Farm, 1986.
(Emma is at the bar studiously ignoring my subliminal efforts to get her to order me a pint) 🍻
25 years ago today, Ladykillers released.
Here's me and Emma having hair and make-up done for the video, shot in Los Angeles. Felt like a very lavish production with loads of extras and the requirement for some 'acting' from us (embarrassing!) Lovely team, though, and top fun!
AMAZING NEWS so hold onto your hats and cats!!!! My book will very shortly be available in the US and Canada - flurry of excitable posts and links coming soon. 🤩

Relieved to escape boiling London for a day to hook up with
@MarkGardener
at his fabulous studio for a MASSIVE gossipy catch-up and some super special extra bits for my book. Xx
Well, if you’d told me back in the ‘90s that I’d one day be hearing Where Is My Mind by The Pixies performed at my sons school production of Macbeth, I’d have raised a glass and said “fucking hell, that sounds amazing”.
Lollapalooza ’92, Boston. People think when you shut yourself in the ‘relaxation room’ for hours with the shades drawn, you’re doing heroin or having a wank. The reality is you're in GameBoy world being Bart Simpson hurling tofu burgers and broccoli spears
Been doing interviews about the book (which is a bit about Lush but - more interestingly - about coming of age) and it is very WEIRD casting back and reliving being a teenager. Sigh - seventeen and everything ahead of me....
September is Cocteau Twins month! Garlands, Blue Bell Knoll and Heaven or Las Vegas were all released in Sept, so here’s a random flurry of photos - me and Emma with Robin Guthrie from 1994, backstage at the Ubu in Rennes
AT LAST!!!! Spooky, Split & Lovelife are back on vinyl - remastered on limited-edition clear and standard black. Coming 11 August.
Pre-order your Shoey/Dreampop/Britpop/whatever-the-fk-you-wanna-call-it bundle here:
Happy birthday to Chris, who would be 53 today. ❤️
He was always most happy and at home in the countryside. Pic taken around Dizzard Point, north Cornwall, in 1987.
Much as I feel that awards and lists are a bunch of shite (having been ignored for all of them), I have to admit that after a lifetime of being massively underestimated by talentless cunts there's some vindication in finally being included so fuck it, 2am champagne and loud music
Here's a couple of polaroid snaps from our Melody Maker session with Tom Sheehan in Jan 1996. I get a lot of compliments/questions about that green dress but it was nothing special - £14.99 off the H&M office Christmas party rack!
If you think for a moment that no one will give a shit, you’re wrong. Life can be crap, I get it, but before you give up on it, please reach out to anyone who might talk you out of it. I hope I'm not speaking out of turn, but suicide is a terrible solution. Lots of love Xxx
Me and Moose - 25 Years together, today! 🍾❤️🥳
This is us on the Prater Park ferris wheel in Austria, which is why I look rictus smile/terrified but Moose vetted every other pic I chose and I am letting him have his own way just this once as an Anniversary concession 😆
Apologies for being off radar for a bit but my work/life balance is completely fucked until Dec, so for now here's a nice pic from the 1990s of my and my cat Gully doing intense starey eyes
Huge thanks from
@Lowtit
for the photo!
Oops. Roaring drunk bombshell tweet. Not the first and won't be the last, not big or clever but I'm glad it gave you a buzz. You'll have to wait for the book next year, once the lawyers have had a chance to clear it. Meanwhile, here's a nice pic of a fox I met last night.
Parcelled up some books to send to friends/family abroad – phew, postage is hefty! Shoutout to any US folk – if you would love to buy the book, can you reply/like/comment/retweet so I can get a gauge on interest as I hunt for a publisher over there? 💋
Woohoo! Smell the Glove is here! Getting actual physical proofs is like, GULP, it's really happening!!
Right, I'm off to make a quiche to celebrate
Out 29 Sept, Pre-order links for hardback and audiobook (read by me!):
I’m in LA! Just stuffed my face with a very yummy and sloppy chilli dog and now walking it off and marvelling as ever that cars outnumber pedestrians by about 500 to 1
My 1st Glastonbury 1987. Excited to be buying chips next to Barney from New Order (Em pointing and silent mouthing "It’s HIM”). Laughing lost in the dark after singalong to Elvis Costello. The cider was excellent but the memory of the toilets still haunts me.
Obscure shoey fact of the day: Lots of people think it's Billinda on the cover of My Bloody Valentine's You Made Me Realise but it's actually Melanie, here in this pic with me in 1988. She was mates with Silvana (see diary entry tweet Mar 6!)

Several months later she got a call to be in the title sequence but had to break the news that she was by now massively pregnant. Despite not being able to do the silhouette karate shots, she still got the gig. I was born 4 days later! 2/2
Clearing out my crap and found an old notebook with an autograph… Elizabeth Montgomery from Bewitched! Sudden flashback to 12-year-old me so excited because a bit of me DID actually believe she was a cool witch.
My few days sojourn in the North has been full of comfort and joy in the company (and hospitality) of Patrick Fitzgerald (Kitchens of Distinction) and Karl. Plenty of sourdough and some proper catch-up goss.
Since island bolt-holes are the meme du jour, I am immersing myself in the memory of Inishmore, Galway Bay, summer of '95. There's Chris and Emma having a dip (background, right), shortly before discovering that the sea was absolutely writhing with jellyfish

not sure, but remembering Chris on what would (and should) have been his 56th birthday. Well, we all have people we miss and I'm remembering mine. ❤️
Chris should be here, and it’s a huge mistake that he isn’t. He thought he was doing us all a favour by not bothering us with his problems, and here we are 30 years on, still tearing ourselves apart wishing we could have saved him.
Thanks
@shaunwkeaveny
for a fabulous party. So utterly trashed today i can only lie under my duvet eating bread.
Think I was dancing to Queen, which is a first.
Sweetness and Light came out this week in 1990 - I could never have predicted that just shy of 3 decades later me and that single’s producer Tim Friese-Green would be on a People’s Vote march together!
Ok, so if you hadn’t pieced it together - mystery over. The new band is me, Moose, Justin Welch and (drum roll…) Michael Conroy (Modern English). He was such an amazing star stepping in at the last ever Lush show that I’ve not since let him out of my sight
FANCAM ALERT
Always amusing to see me associated with the word 'perfection' as I am so so so so so SO far from perfect, as everyone who has ever met me can verify. But thank you for the compliment, I appreciate it
Ladykillers is the Lush song that gets me the most antagonism. Men (and ONLY men) complain I've been unfair - "ok, we're clumsy at playing the sexual dance, but don't slam us down for trying". I say - try doing that dance without treating us like conquerable prey. We'd like that.

of me and Emma backstage in Nantes, Feb 1990 (taken by Lincoln Fong). I'm tutting at 22-y-o me's dreadful manners putting feet on the table near food. 😠😳

1/3 Despite returning from LA a full week ago, it's past midnight and I am still jet-agged to fuck, so here is a little photo collation of me and my mum over the decades (she was the main point of my visit), which is a sideline illustration to say:
My relative
@corneliusjapan
just emailed me: "This photo was taken a long time ago by my friend Kenji. I think it's very good, so I'm sending it to you."
I love it!
Very fancy taster course dinner at Eatrip Harajuku with (1st) cousins Wataru and Takashi (Hanaregumi - yet another family musician). Last tube home and crossing my fingers that i make the train connection (otherwise it’s a very long walk)
