Wi-Fi folks should’ve realized this long ago, having dealt with 20 years of RRM/AirMatch/etc. not working as promised.
BREAKING: Apple just proved AI "reasoning" models like Claude, DeepSeek-R1, and o3-mini don't actually reason at all. They just memorize patterns really well. Here's what Apple discovered:. (hint: we're not as close to AGI as the hype suggests)

Recent moves by Charter & John Malone tell me the FCC is soon going to go in the opposite direction of Net Neutrality. I expect we’ll still have an open internet, but if you want to offer reliable SaaS or streaming you’ll have to pay extra to Internet providers. cc: @mikeddano.

Must admit I had no idea about DePIN. Looks like DePIN companies offer their own #shitcoin in exchange for opening up Wi-Fi networks to guests.
AT&T is supplementing its cellular network with Wi-Fi from several #DePIN companies. It's another signal that future wireless networks will stretch across multiple access technologies. .$T @helium @XNET_Mobile @karrier_one.

Be ready, Wi-Fi folks. As cellular growth plateaus, providers will look to extract more $ from existing customers. That may mean a return to data caps, which in turn may nudge a large # of phones towards guest Wi-Fi.
the financial analysts at TD Cowen now expect the US wireless industry to collectively grow by 1.38 million postpaid phone customer additions during the first quarter of 2025. That's down 12% year-over-year.

The dream — in my view — should be seamless handoff from cellular (urban) to Wi-Fi (indoors) to satellite (rural).
EchoStar officials have hinted that the company will use its satellite spectrum holdings to pursue the market for phone-to-satellite connections. That could dovetail with Apple's own ambitions in the sector.

Could be a big change for how the FCC operates. I don’t necessarily expect them to take 6 GHz away from Wi-Fi, but it wouldn’t totally shock me. The demand for more spectrum from service providers (and more importantly, their customers) remains.
The FCC has been described as an independent agency for decades, including by SCOTUS itself. But yesterday, the US Solicitor General basically seemed to admit the FCC is *not* actually an independent agency at all.
