My first column is about losing my father to deportation — a grief of distance and of loving someone still living but lost to reach. https://t.co/uDREcQizET

Deportation has taken away the father I once knew and has given me back a person I no longer recognize.

Astead is right and I find it very telling re: the cynical version of identity politics, that it's the class politics leftist who aren't abandoning trans people and other vulnerable groups that establishment Dems were first to blame and offer up after the 2024 loss.
Voter resentment of Dems leftward turn was largely abt perceived focus on cultural issues. So to blanketly apply that to Sanders/Mamdani ignores the class forward nature of their message. The DSA “left” didn’t drive the Dems embrace identity politics wokeness etc. It was really

Republicans have long worried that -- once Trump is gone -- the college graduates whom he alienated will remain Democrats, while the disengaged voters whom he mobilized will stop turning out. The 2025 election results make that scenario more plausible

The 2025 elections illuminate a nightmare scenario for the Republican Party.

2) @NoelKing and I discuss the Dems clean sweep. How much of the Mamdani moment is applicable outside NYC and how much of Democrats success on Tuesday night can be applied to 2026 (probably a lot!) and 2028 (probably a little). It's @today_explained

🚨Two @today_explained episodes from that make sense of this week's election results 1) I talked with @awprokop about the "cowboy" phase of Trump's ICE crackdown, and to @mollymotoole about how the American electorate continues to shift on the issue of immigration, with growing

At the same time — the current backlash to identity politics in national media is such that the fact that Dems biggest winners were all history makers feels like it’s being ignored. I would like to clarify that I think voters care abt representation. They just want it coupled

Great graphic. Would often tell the ppl most confused about Mamdani's rise to ask themselves three questions -- do you take public transit -- do you rent -- do you use tik tok that's more or less the coalition
The new political map of NYC shows some stark divides: Very wealthy, very white and very Hasidic parts of the city went for Cuomo. Young, Black and Hispanic voters went for Mamdani. But the biggest divide? Transit vs. cars. https://t.co/vKjN2i7JDk
