This year’s wildfire season is off to an early and busy start. Much of Alberta is experiencing very high to extreme drought conditions and there have already been evacuation alerts in parts of the province.

With the surge in COVID-19 infections in the province, health care professionals are urging Albertans to wear masks and get vaccinated. Don’t turn your back on COVID. (1/2)
There will continue to be debate on mandates for public health measures. In the meantime we should follow the scientific evidence. In respiratory virus season, experts everywhere agree that masking is a good option in crowded spaces. 1/3
The Alberta Medical Association calls on the Government of Alberta to re-institute more strict public health measures. Immediate action is needed, given the sharp rise in case numbers and patients in hospital and ICU. The measures instituted on September 3 are unlikely... 1/2

Tomorrow, starting at 8am, 24 family doctors will share their stories in their own words – one every hour, for 24 hours. Albertans should be concerned about the stability of family and rural medicine in our province. The urgency is real. 🆘🚨

Yesterday we cut through the fog created by government about who provides primary care in Alberta. Our colleagues across the health care spectrum deserve respect and support. So do family physicians, who cannot be replaced by nurse practitioners. 🧵1/6
With great sorrow, we recognize the death of a Lethbridge physician related to COVID-19. So many Albertans have lost loved ones and friends to this terrible disease. The physician community joins in mourning a colleague and leader of his health community.
Concerning the letter written by a group of physicians yesterday regarding the resignation of Dr. Esther Tailfeathers, we should recognize the bravery of the physicians speaking out on this way.

Statement on transgender care from the Alberta Psychiatric Association (inclusive of AMA Sections of General Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry)
Fact One: Our hospitals continue to be overloaded.
Fact Two: Our health care team members are worn out & burnt out from making do for too long in situations they never signed up for.
Fact Three : Too few Albertans are seeking immunization.
Fact Four: This is a bad combination.

Today we learned
@yourAlberta
will proceed with its framework on March 31. Adding further disruption & uncertainty to a health care system under unprecedented pressure from COVID-19 is irresponsible & not in the best interests of the system or patients.
We warned
@yourAlberta
their changes would force an untenable position of physicians choosing between being financially viable and offering best care to patients. Our messages were ignored and we are now facing the consequences in the midst of a pandemic.
The Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS) reported an unprecedented number of unfilled family medicine spaces in Alberta in their round one match this year. Unfortunately, the second round of matching has filled only 20 of the 42 vacancies.

While we're on the subject... Things that other provinces have:
- Doctors are free to work where they choose
- Doctors are allowed to quit or retire without government approval
- Governments that don't vilify them on social media and in public
- A contract
- Trust

Please address the following publicly here on twitter, since you were unwilling or unable to in negotiations. If you truly supported mediation, then you should truly support arbitration. Or are contracts meaningless to

@GoAHealth
was clear from the beginning that all options were on the table. For months, we negotiated with the AMA. And then we tried mediation. Our goal, was to find a way to prevent $2B in cost overruns. The AMA could have presented alternatives. And yet they refused to do so.

Our pediatric colleagues have developed a statement of response that we fully support. I quote one sentence that I think really says it all: “The doctor-patient relationship is inviolable and sacrosanct.”
Physician Spending Fact: The amount that Alberta spends on its physicians (just under 23% of total health care budget) is consistent with what other provinces spend on physicians. 1/5
