I was stuck on a third gag for the multiple door sequence, and I didn't think this idea was going to get through but I'm so glad it did. I didn't get to call notes on this episode, but the scary SQ face was supposed to get closer and closer to camera before SQ slams the door shut
In order to keep designs consistent in animation with such volumetric characters, there are a ton of drawing tips to keep in mind! Here are some excerpts from the dos and don'ts packet I worked on over the course of a year.
There is a lot to be inspired by on the SpongeBob server at work. Just look at the remarkable beauty of these early season paintings. Nick Jennings is a mind-bendingly genius art director.
A lost painting from a deleted scene in the SpongeBob episode "Snowball Effect." I love the flat, simplification of the hooks and the lack of expression on the tortured snowmen.
Keep your eyes peeled for a new Tenacious D song and music video that I directed on with
@OneyNG
and my awesome crew! Follow the countdown for the release this Thursday at 9am PT!
Hey everyone, here is the new show I’ve been working on for the past few months!! I can’t wait to start showing you guys what we’ve been working on, it will be a while from now. In the meantime, I can start posting some non-canon doodles.
Steve’s drawings have so much loose confidence and genuine charm to them. It feels good to look at, clever and simple. Not often does an artist make something so pure and funny. SpongeBob is a rare show made by a rare type of person. Steve will always be an inspiration.
I empathize with the SpongeBob fans who were disappointed tonight, I too wanted to see "Sweet Victory" performed. The amount of people who cared about Steve and tried to make that tribute happen is amazing. You guys still broke through to the Super Bowl by getting that clip on TV
Tomorrow is my last day on SpongeBob and at Nickelodeon. I started drawing for SB August 9, 2013. It was my first job, and one I’m very proud of. Everything I’ve learned here and from the artists around me has been the most inspirational part of my life so far.
First look at "The Cuphead Show!" animated series (Netflix).
Produced by Dave Wasson (Mickey Mouse Shorts) & Cosmo Segurson (Rocko's Modern Life: Static Cling).
Some pages from King Dice's do's and don'ts. These packets evolved the more I saw how people drew and animated him. What worked and what didn't all became informative to these guides. Dice is a very smooth, refined character so I wanted to keep him more consistent and clean.
Steve Hillenburg is the reason I've always given 110% on SpongeBob. He's been an inspiration to me since I was 7, and it was the greatest honor to work for him, my personal hero. What always inspired me most about Steve was his humble nature. Thanks for everything, Steve.
I had a blast directing the opening credits for The Cuphead Show! Boarded by
@crazybaloney
and Ian V! Here are some of the character design roughs and clean up note notes that I did.
When doing retakes on the pilot "Carn-Evil" I had a chance to revise animation. A pilot is the start of a big learning curve, it was nice to get a chance to use the months of experience since I had boarded the episode to plus my drawings. I love how the episode turned out! (1/4)
Some pages from the Devil's do's and don'ts packet. These packets are technical breakdowns so they aren't always fun, but there are some great expressions in here from throughout the series. When the last drop of episodes airs I can post more without spoiling anything.
Some board/layout drawings from "Jellyfish Hunter" of a creepy Mr. Krabs (aka "MOAR Krabs") that never made it to final film. Not sure which artist drew these, possibly Ted Couldron or Kenny Pittenger(?)
Incredibly happy to see
@tenaciousd
perform “Video Games” live at the Hollywood Bowl for The Game Awards! Also, proud to see the work of the amazing work of the team behind the music video featured as the onstage visualizer!
We didn’t win at the Emmys this time but my favorite part of the show tonight was seeing them honor Steve Hillenburg. Always an inspiration and legend.
Make sure to check out the second drop of The Cuphead Show tonight at midnight! As a sneak peek, here are some character poses I cleaned up from Ian Vasquez’s great board poses.
For the Henchman fans. His design was based on the elephant demon from the game's final boss level. Once we found his personality in the show, his design softened more as he became the Devil's lovable assistant.
There's a FALSE rumor going around that SpongeBob is ending on March 1st, 2018 but it's not true. Someone photoshopped a fake tweet. Anyways, back to working on Season 12!
For the Cuphead Show pilot "Carn-Evil", I had a fun time coming up with some incidentals. It became a hodgepodge of different worlds (animals, plants, food, objects) that somehow made sense when walking around.
The more I drew Cuphead and Mugman I realized a lot of surprising ways to have them emote. Their straws and handles came in handy. Here are some more drawings from the early days.
That's the last of The Cuphead Show episodes that we made. There were a heap of episodes that were fully storyboarded, some starring your favorite game bosses, that never got to see the light of day due to budget/time running out. I really hope they can be shared soon.
I had an idea for a SpongeBob episode that I never pitched, it centered around Plankton. Here are some thumbnails from it, in which he eats a grape. (1/2)
I had fun with the final tree monster design from The Cuphead Show! Check out "Ghosts Ain't Real" that I directed, and was storyboarded by the wildly talented
@crazybaloney
and Ian V!
The Devil's tapestries were one of my favorite things to design. Taking inspiration from early surrealist paintings, Renaissance portrayals of the Devil, and of course Night on Bald Mountain.
#cupheadshow
Sketches from my first day on The Cuphead Show. The take away from these early drawings was to pull back from doing the pushed "Ren & Stimpy" style poses and work within the limitations of the 1930s.
"High Seas Adventure" was a fun Cuphead episode to direct.
@MagicBunnyArt
@Ferny_Puig
@crazybaloney
and Ian Vasquez all did fantastic work storyboarding the epic two-parter. Here is some early previz and production art.
When trying to find the worst psychic in LA with
@psychicpebble
and
@MichaelRCusack
, I stumbled upon some amazingly insane, bad Yelp reviews. This was my favorite.
"Down and Out" was one of my favorite episodes to direct in the last drop. I'm glad we got to do more with King Dice and give him his own episode. So many great board poses by
@crazybaloney
@TweetinV
@AGuyWhoDraws
@ProjectENDO
Steve is still an inspiration, I’m glad a lot of SpongeBob fans recognize not only his work but admire his kindness and integrity. Lots of great people on SpongeBob in general, I’m still grateful to have had my start with them. Lots of talent and heart.
More from "High Seas Adventure". I loved the board poses so as the supervising director, I wanted to maintain everything. For example, Cala had a lot of special mouth poses in part 2, which in some instances I had to do entire mouth charts for.
This is one of my favorite paintings on the show. Great sense of depth, use of black and neon, nice reflected lights, colored outlines, and great sense of texture and volume on all of the elements...It's so pretty!!
Like every stickler, The Cuphead Show's Stickler comes with "rules." Here was my rough design for him and pages from his dos and don'ts packet. He's a very static, rigid character but it's part of what makes him unique on the show.
@jaxamoto
and I made some traditional pumpkin art yesterday while
@psychicpebble
made an illustration of me that misrepresents my character and tolerance towards witches.
On the same day, Chris Chan and Tommy Wiseau, two people both made famous by failure, both faced closure to their life of humility through celebration from their peers in the most appropriately ironic fashion. A very interesting start to 2018.
There's a lot going on even in this simple painting. Look at all the colors in the grease, the subtleties in the cracks, and the different (directional) dry paint texture on the foundation behind the concrete. Props to whoever painted this one.
