I’m not an expert. To me it looks like the US progressive establishment is tied up issues that are important to itself and not the voters. Hence, Zohran Mamdani. In that sense it’s not too different from 2016 and 2024 when Trump won.

I just started reading @samanth_s's "The Web Beneath the Waves" and it promises to be outstanding. As someone who worked in the undersea telecom cable business around the turn of the century, even I am struck by how much it has now become part of geopolitics.

That India’s balcony people now know more about Mamdani than any Indian chief minister is a natural outcome of the huge cultural surplus America has over us. We are interested in America and America has no interest in us. I don’t want to stretch a metaphor too much but maybe

That’s the business taking the risk. Not a task for the government to make business decisions. We need to get over this malaise that afflicts us - looking to government for everything. Govt has plenty to do. And it does those badly. Let’s please not add to that

No court verdict can save a population that does not have enough of a sense of commonness to cooperate on a matter of survival. If political preferences of voters don’t care for bodily survival then why should any other institution care?

Why can’t India tackle problems like pollution? Because there is no “them” who can demonised as the culprit. There’s only “us”. And “we” don’t like to be blamed.
