@TheRaDR In US tort law, a fetus is part of the pregnant person's body as well. This notion that women carry fetuses like a Tamagotchi in their pockets drives me crazy! Embryos & fetuses are hard wired into our uteruses.

Sotomayor: “the issue of when life begins has been hotly debated by philosophers, and it’s still debated by religions. That’s a religions issue, isn’t it?” DING DING DING In Judaism, the fetus is regarded as part of the pregnant person’s body until birth. This is a 1A issue.

@ALReproRightsAd @TheRaDR Loving this. Yes. When I'm pregnant, that's not a person inside me. It's organs I've grown, like my spleen. MY second heart that beats, MY blood that circulates around these new arms and legs. If it was foreign my body would reject it.Birth is what changes that. Cutting the cord.

@Quatr_us @TheRaDR You certainly riled up the faction that believes an embryo or fetus is like a Tamagotchi. They dusted off their talking points about DNA and blood types. I'd note that amniotic fluid circulates around the fetus rather than blood, but it is indeed the pregnant person's fluid.

@ALReproRightsAd @TheRaDR And inheritance law. If their ou'r biillionaire dad married a much younger lady who gets pregnant when he passed away does that child get full inheritance even if it was still born?

@cminmd @TheRaDR Fortunately, the men who created common law did not believe in personhood at fertilization!

@ALReproRightsAd @TheRaDR This is true in the Old Testament as well. Causing the death of a fetus is not treated like murder.

@ALReproRightsAd @TheRaDR This week I read about how the placenta burrows into the core arteries to fuel brain development, which is why we're more susceptible to haemorrhage than other species and why they are so devastating.

@ALReproRightsAd @TheRaDR Or our fallopian tubes, if we're so unlucky to have an ectopic pregnancy. Which is often not even discovered until, say, 7 weeks in. But I guess Texas just wants women w/ectopic pregnancies to die for the cause??

@ALReproRightsAd @TheRaDR Ala. Code § 13A-6-1 (2006) defines "person," for the purpose of criminal homicide or assaults, to include an unborn child in utero at any stage...

@ALReproRightsAd @TheRaDR Surely that is a legal consturct for the purpose of defining matters such as destruction of the unborn child. It clearly requires revisiting for the issue of abortion, as it is not rooted in biology.
