🚨 My first PhD paper is out! In this preregistered study, we assessed how menopause-related factors, depression, and genetic risk for Alzheimer's disease (APOE ε4) are linked to cellular and brain aging in women using data from the UK biobank. 🧵 https://t.co/CTWQEfbkGK

Far from women’s health being a “niche” area -putting more effort into understanding the multifaceted area of women’s health will lead to exciting new discoveries that will benefit all, regardless of our gender.

New from @Nature: a maternal brain hormone that builds bone 🤯🦴 During #breastfeeding, bones are stripped of calcium - yet they don't break down. A hormone discovered in lactating mice explains why not - and might someday help treat osteoporosis!🤓 https://t.co/SBhmccnNKJ

✨Overall, this study highlights both a need for more studies with a focus on women’s health, and more representative samples to advance scientific research.

Our findings were puzzling, likely due to a common bias in research: participants, particularly older ones, tend to be healthier than the general population. These puzzling findings are also a prime example of the importance of preregistration!

Next, we examined additive and interactive relations between menopause-related factors with depression and APOE ε4, and saw that adding depression and APOE ε4 explained the most variance across proxies of aging.

We saw that postmenopause and older age at menopause were linked to longer telomere length - our marker of cellular aging, and lower brain age gap - our marker of brain aging. Surgical menopause and longer reproductive span were also associated with longer telomeres.
