In the end, the board established new criteria for its next vendor: experience in a large urban district, expertise on student outcomes-focused governance, has cultural awareness that excels in diversity, equity and inclusion practices, local and a transparent process. (12/12)

Other members stated that the previous vendor delivered results, citing progress made in math proficiency for Yazzie-Martinez students. (11/12).

Members supported by the teachers union noted how the previous contract pitted the members against each other and said the Council of Great City Schools did not pay enough attention to minority students. (10/12).

NEW CONTRACTOR: APS discussed criteria for a new vendor after tension between board factions over the district’s previous contract with the Council of Great City Schools, which provided coaching services to the board. (9/12)

The board’s previous goal of 72 points was reduced to 58 for its next quarter, which runs through September. (8/12).

Board members are required to measure work and perceived success in six categories: vision and goals, values and guardrails, monitoring and accountability, communication and collaboration, unity and trust, and continuous improvement. (7/12).

SELF EVALUATION: APS gave itself a 58 out of 100 on its self evaluation at the board meeting. The district is still struggling with chronic absenteeism and student academic performance, though some progress is being made. (6/12)

Yazzie-Martinez students in the seventh grade passed the district's goal of 16%. The districtwide averages for sixth- and seventh-graders were 30% and 25.2% respectively. Also, federal funding cuts could further hinder districts from supporting Yazzie-Martinez students. (5/12).

Sixth-grade Yazzie-Martinez students achieved a 20.4% math proficiency, surpassing APS’ goal of 19.6%. However, the sixth-grade class monitored last year achieved 21.6% math proficiency. (4/12).

The state identifies English language learners, economically disadvantaged students, Native students and students with disabilities as Yazzie-Martinez students, a reference to the lawsuit where parents successfully sued the state for providing inadequate public education. (3/12).

MATH PROFICIENCY: Sixth- and seventh-graders in APS identified as undeserved by a 2018 lawsuit against the Public Education Department are currently on par with targets the district set for them, but underperformed compared to classes in the previous year. (2/12).
