2/ A substantial % of the Continental Army fighting the English at the time were Irish Presbyterians. It would be their Irish cousins back home who would found the #UnitedIrishmen Washington called them "A Brave and Generous People": in his St. Patrick's Day Proclamation of 1780

@1798walkingtour Washington only supported the Volunteers Movement in the early 1780s as their aims were solidly similar to the 1773-75 political issues that they experienced. Iโ€™m sure he recognised and valued the input of the Irish emigres to the Continental Army (1)
